Christian nuns beaten by Hindu radicals in Gujarat
NEW DELHI: Three Christian nuns accompanying children from an orphanage were beaten up by followers of a radical Hindu group in the western Indian state of Gujarat, church officials said on Wednesday. The incident happened when the group's vehicles stopped at a petrol station where the nuns got into an argument with the owner, who is a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council).
The Hindu newspaper quoted Samual Christian, executive member of the All India Christian Council, as saying that nearly 30 members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad surrounded the nuns and their Muslim drivers and beat them with sticks. They fled and stopped a police vehicle on the road to ask for help, but the officer told the nuns to lodge a complaint at a nearby police station.
Policemen at the station refused to lodge the complaint and beat up the drivers of the car carrying the nuns and children for trying to argue with the VHP members, the Hindu said. Christian groups across India on Wednesday protested against the incident and demanded an investigation by the federal Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Meanwhile, tensions were high in the town of Anakapalli in southern Andhra Pradesh state following the destruction on Tuesday of 43 tombs at a Christian burial site whose ownership had been disputed with the local Hindu religious leadership. Police said three people had been arrested for damaging the tombs.
"Based on a complaint made to our police department we arrested three people, including the head of the Hindu religious organisation involved in the dispute," spokesman A.R. Reddy said. "A local court has remanded all three to two weeks of judicial custody. We have set up a police picket at the burial site to prevent any further vandalism," he added.
