    Just read it....

'The unbelievers are protectors one of another: unless ye do this (protect each other) there would be tumult and oppression on earth and great mischief.'
    (Surah Al Anfal, verse 73)

Evil consorts with evil. The good have all the more reason for drawing together and not only living in mutual harmony, but being ready at all times to protect each other. Otherwise the world will be given over to agressions by unscrupulous people, and the good will fail in their duty to establish Allah's Peace and to strengthen all the forces of truth and righteousness.

Let us study the referred verse in its context. Al-Anfaal 8: 72 – 73 reads as:

"Indeed those, who believed, migrated and the strived with their wealth and their selves, in the way of God, and those who have provided them shelter and have helped them, they are all friends one of the other. Those, who believed and still, not migrated, you are not responsible for them [and their well being] in the least, until they migrate. However, if they call you for help in the name of religion, it is binding upon you to help them, except in case that your help be against a people with whom you have already contracted an agreement [of peace]. And [bear in mind that] God sees whatever you do. And [why would you not help them? While] those who reject, they are helpers one of the other; if you do it not, there shall be persecution in the land and a great disorder."

The correct context of the verse Al-Anfaal 8:73 can easily be seen in view of the preceding verse.

The relevant part of the commentary of Al-Tabariy regarding this verse is reproduced below:

"The interpreters have differed in determining the meaning of “if you do it not, there shall be persecution in the land and a great disorder”. Some say that it means that if you do not make the Muhaajirs and the Ansaar inheritors of each other, as you have been directed to do. The Muhaajirs and the Ansaar are related to each other through their Hirjah and through their Imaan unlike those of their relatives who have either not migrated or have not accepted Imaan. Thus, if you do not give them inheritance, there shall be great persecution – implying calamities – and disorder – implying disobedience toward God – in the land. Those who ascribe to this opinion have narrated…

Others say that it means that ‘Muslims, if you do not help each other in the name of religion, there shall be persecution in the land and a great disorder’. Those who ascribe to this opinion have narrated...

Abu Jaafer has said that the best of the two interpretations is his, who says that its meaning is that the rejecters are helpers one of the other and not of the believers. This evidences that God has prohibited for the believers to stay in a land, which is at war with the Muslims and to ignore migrating from such a land… Thus, it is clear that the more appropriate of the two interpretations of “if you do it not, there shall be persecution in the land and a great disorder” is his, who says that ‘if you do not do what you have been ordained to do, regarding helping and cooperating with each other in the name of religion, there shall then be persecution in the land’, specially when the opening part of the verse has already said: “Indeed those, who believed, migrated and the strived with their wealth and their selves”, prompting Muslims to help and cooperate with each other in the name of religion, it was necessary that the verse be ended with the same directive."

This is what Al-Tabariy has written in the explanation of the referred verse.

As you can see, the context of the verse is somewhat more qualified than it may first seem when taken at face value. Bear in mind that the whole context of this chapter is to do with the circumstances, as the name of the chapter suggests, with the spoils of war.
