Leaving presidency with sense of accomplishment: Zardari

    Nice Speech Zardari Sahib

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the PPP will extend fullest support to the PML-N government in tackling challenges like terrorism and economic recovery.

He was speaking at a dinner he hosted in Islamabad on Monday night in honour of journalists.

The President said being the opposition it is right of the PPP to criticise the government but it will back the government in all its positive moves.

He said he was leaving the presidency after five years with a sense of accomplishment as he looked after transition to democracy and transferred his powers to the Parliament.

He said he has no regrets as transition to democracy means strengthening the democracy and ultimately Pakistan would be the winner.

The President said the country can progress and prosper if there is continuity and carrying forward of the policies like consolidation of relations with China is one such example of continuity. He said rarely in the history of the country anyone left the Presidency with grace but he was leaving it with peace.

The President acknowledged that there might have been failures but added that transition to democracy is a big achievement. He said scarce resources of the country were major hurdle in the way of implementation of his welfare agenda.

The President said media has matured and there is insight in its discussions and programmes.

Of course he accomplished a lot, he sacrificed a PM to maintain his seat, he sacrificed PPP, gathered enough wealth for himself and his cronies with legal immunity.

reminds me of an old tale that i used to hear from elders..
a kingdom's ruler died and according to custom the anyone entering from the city gates, first, in the morning was to be named the king. A faqeer happened to be the first person so he was proclaimed the king. Faqeer ordered a grand feast of 'halwa' for the kingdom. few months gone by the enemy attacked, the military commanders asked Faqeer abt defence plans and he ordered another feast of 'halwa' to be prepared, the enemy kept coming closer to the city and the King kept asking for the feast. Once enemy reached at the gates and attacked the faqeer saved some 'halwa' for himself and left the kingdom, probably with a sense of accomplishment. :-p

Although governance wise PPP was a huge disappointment, let's give Zardari some credit for the smooth transition of power from one elected civilian government to another and esp. for not rigging the election. He could have easily tried to win more seats for his party by appointing all YES men in the Election Commission. Indeed there was massive rigging in the general election by some ROs but not by Zardari himself
