    Pakistan welcomes new Indian president
    (Updated at 2000 PST)
ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf voiced hope on Thursday that he could work with India's newly elected president to ease tensions between the neighbouring nuclear states.

India elects missile scientist as president
    (Updated at 1810 PST)
NEW DELHI: Missile scientist and prominent Muslim A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was elected as India's new president on Thursday.

Kalam, a popular former academic and ex-civil servant and father of India's missile programme, was virtually assured of the largely ceremonial post after he won the support of all political parties, except the communists, ahead of Monday's vote.

When counting finished on Thursday, Kalam, 71, had won 4,152 of the total 4,785 votes cast in a complex electoral college system involving national and state lawmakers, officials said.

He will be sworn in for his five-year-term next Wednesday.

Why should we care who their president is?

Adnan, he is a Muslim, and I think its a great thing... Even though I am some what skeptical why they elected a nuclear scientist (as I am sure they have lots of other capable Muslim politicians) I think he can help in easing the tensions between the two country.

Both of us cannot afford a war, and if by some way these problems between us can be sorted out, we can become great trade partners and friends...

I wish Mr. Kalaam best of luck...

Spock, though I wish you are right, but I personally doubt that its going to have any effect on India-Pakistan realtions. No doubt that Kalam sahib is a Muslim, but dont forget that he is also a nationalist, And nationalists are usually hawks. In my opinion, the only time India-Pakistan can enjoy a friendly relationship, is when there is a change of government in New Delhi.

Kalam is an Indian, and as such, his being Muslim is irrelevent. Its his bomb that would be the death of millions of mulsims. He cares little for Pakistan even if its a Muslim country... For him its India. We should be as cautious of him as we are of Advani.

You need not worry about democracy in Pakistan Mr. India... We will have whatever system we like and you Indians can stick it... We dont want another Ganja or BB in power again... btw, how can you say the BJP should not be in power... That proves your democracy sux, as the country keeps voting them in power (so that they can fry the muslims there)

Those of you who think he is Muslim, check this out to see how much of a Muslim he is:

Although born to Muslim parents, Kalam, 71, does not describe himself as Muslim. He reads Hindu scriptures each day and is a vegetarian. Critics of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or Indian People's Party, say Kalam was chosen to paper over the anti-Muslim image the government acquired after sectarian violence broke out in the western state of Gujarat in February.
                    Scientist Is Elected India's President

NEW DELHI -- A missile scientist who advocates nuclear weapons as a war deterrent was elected India's ceremonial president Thursday.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam won 89.58% of the votes cast by 4,896 members of Parliament and state legislatures. The only other candidate was Lakshmi Sehgal, an 87-year-old woman proposed by leftist parties.

Opposition parties and human rights groups have blamed the BJP-run state government in Gujarat of encouraging the religious violence--or doing little to stop it. About 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed in the clashes.

Muslims have mostly reacted with indifference to Kalam's elevation to the presidency. He is identified with the BJP to such an extent that no Muslim organization has welcomed his selection.

Kalam said his scientific career prepared him for politics. The father of India's nuclear missile program, he helped develop missiles to carry nuclear weapons and rockets to launch satellites.

"Unless political decisions are taken, the satellite won't be in orbit, the missile won't reach its target, the nuclear weapon won't be there," Kalam said.

He will be sworn in as India's 11th president next Thursday, replacing Kocheril Raman Narayanan, who is completing a five-year term in office.

Kalam, an advocate of scientific education for children, has insisted that his presidency would not signal warlike intentions from India.

Instead, it would show the world that "technology is going to be used for development of the nation," he said.

Kalam told reporters Thursday that the alleviation of poverty and development of rural areas are important issues for India.
