    Explosion in Pakistan Injures 13

PESHAWAR, Pakistan- An explosion at an archaeological site in northern Pakistan injured 13 people Saturday, most of them German and Austrian tourists, police said. Officials said no one was seriously hurt.

Officials said they were uncertain what caused the blast about 170 miles north of Peshawar. But the government-run news agency quoted a senior Interior Ministry official as saying a handmade explosive device was thrown at the tourists.

The agency also quoted Brig. Javed Iqbal Cheema as saying that all the injured had been treated at an area hospital and released.

"They are returning to Islamabad," he was quoted as saying.

No arrests have been made so far, the agency reported.

Police said a tourist van carrying about 21 people had stopped at the site of inscriptions associated with the Mauryan emperor Ashoka when the explosion occurred.

Seven Germans, three Austrians and three Pakistanis were injured, police said.

In the capital Islamabad, the Interior Ministry confirmed the explosion but offered no further details

    Foreigners Hurt In Grenade Attack

Islamabad - Nine foreigners and three Pakistanis were hurt on Saturday when an unidentified assailant hurled a hand grenade at a tourist party in northern Pakistan, a senior interior ministry official said.

The nine included seven Germans, one Austrian and one Slovenian but the official described the injuries as minor and said all had been discharged from hospital.

Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema, head of interior ministry's Crisis Management Cell, told Reuters the tourists were visiting historical Ashoka sites near Mansehra city in northwestern Frontier Province when they came under attack.

"Some 12 people were injured but they have very superfluous injuries and all have been discharged from the hospital," he added.

PT, the good thing is these are just desperate last resorts. Pakistan is no longer a free haven for fundos anymore. The govt is pushing down on them hard and they are retaliating in the last bid. Although ppl like ak47 are very sad that these fundos are getting crushed, theres nothing they can do about it. Mush spoke highly of the police whom I too salute for they took out a fundo like Riaz Basra whom these ppl call an Islamic hero, even though he openly killed other Muslims and believed he would goto heaven just because he did so.

And isnt it amazing to see how you were so glad the Chechan Al-Qaeda members killed 10 Pakistanis? Then you immediately shifted the blame to the US and said there was nothing called the Al-Qaeda... Before pointing at someone else, have a look at your own sleeves. Someone even hailed it as a victory for the Pakhtuns, saying 'they dont take **** '. And quite frankly, I care more about the death of Pakistanis than Afghanis, for Afghans have been hostile and unthankful to Pakistan.

As for the fundos, like I said before, they are running out of time. Its such a relief that Pakistan will no longer be used for fullfilling some fundos' religious prophecies. Its about time ppl like Riaz Basra burn in hell.

Police Arrest 20 Over Attack On European Tourists

Pakistan police yesterday arrested 20 people in connection with a grenade attack against a group of European tourists in the remote North-West Frontier Province, officials said.

Most of the suspects were taken in to custody from an Afghan refugee camp at Mansehra where the tourists were attacked yesterday as they stopped on their way to China along the mountainous Karakoram highway, police said.

A district police official said that forensic experts found the pins of two grenades that were lobbed yesterday while the tourists were at an archaeological site in Mansehra, 150 kilometres east of Peshawar.

"Most of those arrested are from the Brady camp for Afghan refugees located about a kilometre away from the incident took place," a local police official told AFP.

The victims were rethinking their holiday plans today and were having meetings with German diplomats in the capital Islamabad, officials said.

They were on a bus carrying 27, mostly Germans, driving along the Karakoram highway heading for China after starting their journey from the city of Rawalpindi, just south of Peshawar.

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin said the tourists were hosted by the German ambassador in Islamabad yesterday. The wounded appeared to have suffered superficial injuries and all of them were out of danger.

"Whether they want to continue with the journey or not is up to them," the German spokesman said when contacted by telephone. "We have seen to it that they were taken to a hospital for a second check up."

A police official said that the attackers hurled two grenades at the group, slightly injuring seven Germans, one Austrian, a Slovenian, two Pakistani children and a local security guard.

The attack was in the North West Frontier Province, which borders Afghanistan. Peshawar is the capital of North West Frontier Province.

A member of the tour group said shortly after the attack on Saturday that they were looking at ancient stone pillars in the picturesque Mansehra area when they heard the blasts.

She said they were not seriously hurt, but nine were taken back to hospital for observation after arrival in Rawalpindi.

The wounded were initially rushed to a local hospital in Mansehra where doctors said all the victims suffered minor injuries and were discharged after treatment.

District police chief Ahsan Mahboob said the coach had been heading towards the Chinese border when it was attacked in an area known for sectarian violence among rival groups.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Pakistan has dwindled following a spate of attacks against foreigners. Most European nations have asked their nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Pakistan.

Eleven French naval engineers were killed in a suicide bomb attack in May in the commercial capital of Karachi, while the US consulate there was bombed in June, killing 12 Pakistanis.

In March, five people, including two American nationals, were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a church inside the diplomatic enclave here. The congregation had people from 14 nationalities.

US journalist Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered, allegedly by Islamic extremists, in January this year.

I find it quite fishy that given the law & order climate and the war actions, that there would be tourists contemplating holiday in NWFP. Makes no sense. Holiday?
