Pak Paper says PAF Officer connected to 9-11 attacks?

    Sept 11, Pak connection

The FBI wants to question PAF Squadron Leader Atif Ahmed bin Mansoor to ascertain whether he was linked with Mohamed Atta, the ringleader of the suicide pilots who hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is set to seek permission from the Musharraf regime to question an officer of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) for his association with Mohamed Atta, the ringleader of the suicide pilots who hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon buildings on September 11.
Highly placed diplomatic sources confided to the Weekly Independent that the FBI sleuths investigating the September 11 terrorist attacks wanted to determine whether a PAF squadron leader, Atif Ahmed bin Mansoor, was linked in any way with Mohamed Atta. Atif and Atta lived and studied together at Germany's little-known engineering institute in the southern Harburg district of Hamburg, called Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), and were given awards of DM 1500 each by the University President Dr Hauke Trinks for outstanding performance in winter semester 1997/98 examinations. The two had ranked among the four best students in the international master's course.

According to FBI investigations, Mohamed Atta, 33, and two other Arab students from the Technical University flew three of the four hijacked planes used in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Atta had trained as an engineer in Egypt before moving to the Technical University where he had once applied for a room to hold meetings of his Islamic Studies Group.

"His co-applicant was Atif Ahmed Bin Mansoor. Born on May 2, 1969 at Hyderabad, Atif's name was blacked out on copies of the application that later surfaced, and thus his name never came forward in the September investigations. While studying at the German University, Atif was on leave from the PAF. Though he was a flight lieutenant with the PAF, it was the science and technology ministry, which sponsored his studies in Germany", say FBI investigations.

As Atif had almost completed his course and was preparing his thesis, he had to return to Pakistan due to the death of his younger brother, Lieutenant Zarrar Ahmed Bin Mansoor. Zarrar and 15 other officers of Pakistan Navy lost their lives on August 10, 1999 after an Indian Air Force MiG 21 shot down a Pakistani surveillance aircraft Breguet Atlantique. Zarrar had joined Navy after matriculation in 1988 and only a year ago he had switched over to aviation. Soon after Zarrar's burial at the Ghazi Road Graveyard in Lahore, Atif was detained and stopped from returning to Germany.

Approached for comments, his father, Mansoor Ahmed, said: "Atif was detained because he had not sought permission from the authorities before returning home to attend his younger brother's funeral. He, however, was set free after a relative of us, a brigadier with the army, intervened and prevailed upon the high-ups. Atif was posted at the Chaklala Airbase in Rawalpindi but was soon transferred to Lahore, courtesy efforts by the then Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshall Aliuddin".

Back in the German University, the investigations show that after Atif left for Pakistan, Mohamed Atta was frequently seen in the company of his first cousin, Marwan Al-Shehhi, who had arrived 'almost as a replacement'. They used to meet with their other companions at the Attawhid bookshop close to the Al-Quds mosque where they would offer prayers as well. About three years later, on September 11 2001, Atta, Shehhi and their other Arab companions hijacked four planes from different airports in America and piloted them into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center buildings. Mohamed Atta hijacked American Flight 11, a Boeing 767, bound for Los Angeles. He and his fellow hijackers crashed it into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Marwan Al-Shehhi boarded United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boeing 767. And he and his fellow hijackers flew it into the South Tower.

The FBI investigations have already established that Atta was among the central figures responsible for conceptualising and executing the terror attacks. "An Egyptian national, Atta was the one to whom Sheikh Ahmed Omar Saeed, the prime suspect in the Daniel Pearl murder case, had sent to Germany a draft for $100,000, in the summer of 2000 employing a pseudonym", says the FBI. The investigators believe that former ISI chief Mahmood Ahmed had also been involved in the transaction of the money to Atta, who reportedly returned $15,600 through the hawala channel just before the kamikaze attacks.

A well-placed diplomatic source said that having acquired all possible information about Atif's association with Atta, the FBI would request permission from the Pakistan government to question the PAF officer. "There is a possibility of Atif being innocent and having nothing to do with Mohamed Atta's terror plans. But given that almost everybody around Atta had later turned up in the September 11 terror plot, there is an equally strong possibility of Atif's not being that innocent," the source added. Atif, however, had no idea about the FBI investigation.

Contacted on his mobile phone, a soft spoken Atif denied having anything to do either with Mohamed Atta or his terrorist network: "I am a responsible officer of the Pakistan Air Force and won't be able to speak further on such a sensitive issue. You will have to come through my organisation. When approached, a PAF spokesman said: "The gentleman in question is a responsible officer and has nothing to do with whatever the FBI is trying to investigate. Not that each and every university fellow of the terrorist should be suspected of involvement in the September 11 attacks. We simply refuse to accept the FBI thesis", the PAF spokesman added.

Same news like Pak aiding Chechyan.

This American FBI really needs to grow up! First, they have clearly warnings about 9-11. They didn't act quickly. Seems like FBI blamming Pakistan for training 9-11 Hijackers, huh! Yep, Pakistan trained them in Miami, Florida, U.S.A, Duh!

    This is childish!

    Pak Paper, oh well!

Simply another try to Blackmail Pak.Govt. Over Kashmir Issue.Specially when Powell is Coming to visit Pakistan at the end of this month or early August. If that news circulate international media Pak is getting only bad reputation.why did FBI wait that long to seek permission to ask Question Atif?Or did they just find out about him?ofcourse they knew about Atif since OCT 2001 but as usual they know when to use and where to use their cards.

          God Bless Pakistan.

FBI should also question and investigate Atta's pet dog, which he had during his stay in Hamburg. The dog may also be involved in the financial transactions of the terrorist plot.

              LOL That's a good one

for the acts of an individual.. the intention is to blackmail an army..

everyone knows it is not possible... especially when i remind you of the Iran-Contra affair.. does anyone remember Ollie North??????

or the famous defections or double crossing of the spies .. one quite recently as it happens

Yes... agreed that no one acts alone.. and probably has a few other collaboraters.. but the Army (any army for that matter) has not taken "theka" to ensure the thoughts of its soldiers..
