Haider, Shaukat grab Asian Amateur Boxing C'ship gold

    By our correspondent

KARACHI: Featherweight Olympian Haider Ali and heavyweight Shaukat Ali Chitta made the nation proud when they earned gold medals in their respective weights in the XXI Asian Amateur Boxing Championship, which concluded at Malaysia on Monday night. With their outstanding performances boxing emerges as the single sport at the moment, in which, Pakistan got double honours in Asia. Asghar Ali Shah claimed bronze medal.

Haider Ali, the SAF Games gold medallist, remained unbeaten till the final round when he drubbed Thailand's pugilist by 16-11 points to snatch gold, informed a message received here from Malaysian city Seremban, where the championship was held.

Haider, the boxer from Pakistan Wapda, was also declared the best boxer of the event, contested by 159 pugilists from 27 Asian countries. On the other hand, Shaukat, the Pakistan Army boxer, who had won Thailand King's Cup gold medal earlier this year, asserted himself as the devastating puncher after thrashing Iranian boxer in the final to grab gold.

However, another Olympian light-welter Asghar Ali Shah, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist from KPT, had to content with a bronze medal, after he conceded his semi-final fight to Uzbekistan's boxer. Middleweight Ahmed Ali, the inexperienced pugilist from Army, was beaten in earlier stage. The triumphant Pakistan boxing team with two gold and a bronze is returning home tonight (Wednesday) from Kuala Lumpur by flight CX 703.
