    Pakistanis in US targeted?

    http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=...2-025701-9547r

Being a Pakistani in the United States post-Sept 11 can be a frightening experience. It's been reported that several hundred Pakistanis have been rounded up and checked for possible links to Islamic terrorism. About 80 are still being held either waiting to be investigated, or because the authorities want to question them further. A large number have been in detention for several weeks, though no charges have been brought against them. What is not known is that a couple of days ago about 200 of these detainees were quietly shipped back home from Washington as illegal aliens. The Pakistanis, who were escorted to a chartered plane by the INS and flown to Islamabad, included students who were working in jobs illegally but only had student visas, some employees in the computer industry, at least one doctor -- a woman -- and even a handful of men who, the INS said, had arranged so-called Green Card marriages, that is married U.S. citizens in order to obtain Green Cards (permanent resident visas.) Administration sources said Pakistanis were among the Islamic nationalities bearing the brunt of the anti-terrorist campaign because of Pakistan's ties with the Afghan Taliban regime, and with al Qaida. They point oout that several Pakistani residents had passed the screening with flying colors and had been released to resume more or less normal lives.
