war may not take place if this deal is through!

Thursday, May 23, 2002 (Washington DC):

As Indo-Pakistan tensions rise, the US is likely to encourage New Delhi's restraint by offering to share space technology, STRATFOR.com, an internet site specialising in security matters, reports.

Washington has taken an active role in managing the tension, but has a limited list of concessions with which to buy Indian restraint. However, sharing space technology could prove key in preventing a wider conflict.

Senior White House officials, speaking to STRATFOR, said they were aware of the potential for violence in the region, but added that the current tension was manageable.

The Bush administration, said STRATFOR, has been playing a key role in postponing this kind of doomsday scenario with a policy basically built on bribery.

Washington rewarded New Delhi's restraint in April when it authorised the first arms deal between the two countries in more than a decade -- the sale of eight weapons-locating radar system. Washington also proposed a series of joint military exercises with the Indian military.

Military equipment worked in the past but it doesn't do much to prevent war on the subcontinent. Moreover, sending military gear to India weakens Pakistan President Musharraf's none-too-sturdy support base at home.

Economic aid does not have much resonance in India's political scene, which has a strong independent streak. However, says STRATFOR, Washington may be able to parley developments in space technology.

The development of space capabilities plays well in Indian politics, which has a tradition of supporting efforts towards national self-sufficiency. This is especially true now that China is making a concerted public effort towards space exploration. (With PTI inputs)

already india has 800 million doller space industry, which brings a lot of revenue to the country so india might consider this deal,if india gets latest space technology, then money provided by space industry will surpass the IT exports earnings!

Good option for India. If we have te technology to spot infiltrators as they come in COMPLETELY, we don't need to blockade Karachi or open other fronts.

    US could well oblige!!

Yes Stavahana (oops I mean Andhra), your 700,000 soldiers can continue raping the Kashmiri women while this technology takes care of the border and the infiltrators.

        You must be pleased

              that is sick.

don't use the issue of rape to score points on whether or India or Pakistan is "better".

rape occurs everywhere, and can be committed by anyone Muslim or non Muslim, Pakistani or non Pakistani.

Stavahana (oops I mean Andhra), raping someone wherever they are, whoever they are, does not make it right. These vile acts should be condemned whereever they occur!!

Once again, rather than condemning such vile acts, you bring up examples to show what the Indian soldiers do to the Kashmiri women is right. You are a disgrace.

Stavahana, this is not about retaliation. This is about condemning the vile act of rape. It is a shame you do not understand. Please, please for once get the mentality of Pak v India, Hindu v Muslim out of your head and condemn this vile act!! While you are at it, please tell your Indian collegues that had advocated the rape of Kashmiri women to do the same.

                      Thank You.

That's what the mahatma would call a 'post-dated check on a crushing bank'. India's space technology will eventually get there anyway, sharing or no sharing. What India can gain now is an unequivocal and formal assurance from Pakistan that it is renouncing terrorism as a state policy. Musharraf just can't afford a war when his 'deterrence' has been screwed. He must be biting his fingers for that fateful decision of deploying nukes during Kargil.
