Police in Pakistan say they have arrested seven people from the outlawed militant group, Lashkar-e-Jhangavi, who had planned a series of attacks in Punjab province.

The arrests were made in Vehari district more than 300kms south-west of Lahore.

Police say the attacks were to have been carried out before the annual Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Azha which falls this Saturday.

Since last month's speech by the Pakistani President, General Pervez Musharraf, in which he promised to curb extremism, police have taken about 1,200 activists into custody.

According to a senior civil servant, most of them are still in detention.
