President Musharraf to appoint interim Prime Minister this month?

If this story turns out to be true it's a good political move, and will ease some of the pressure from the international community. The interim PM will spend the next nine months preparing the ground for the parliamentary elections in October.

New interim set-up likely in weeks

The Musharraf government is considering to appoint an interim prime minister to head a set-up likely to be created by the end of January 2002, sources told The News on Friday. Several names are under consideration but Governor Sindh, Mohammedmian Soomro, is most likely to be the top choice of the government, added the sources which had earlier tipped The News about General Pervez Musharraf becoming the president.

Professionally a banker, having studied in the US and a multi-provincial personality, Soomro is being considered as one among a list of probables for the slot on account of being non-controversial both for the local religious community and the west. Soomro has been the top choice ever since General Musharraf decided to become president.

They added that the military quarters had conceived the plan to induct Musharraf as president, consequently to be assisted by a prime minister, without resorting to elections for allowing the political parties to join the fray for political power. Implementation of this plan to induct an interim government got delayed due to the September 11 incident in the US, the ensuing trouble in the region and the build-up to a war-like situation from the Indian side.

Sources said the Musharraf government conceives that induction of an interim set-up would be imperative once an understanding with India and the international forces on averting further trouble in South Asia is reached. Such a set-up would be given the task of holding and supervising general elections, apart from implementing whatever settlement for peace is reached between India and Pakistan.

According to the sources, President Musharraf is likely to indicate in some way the plan of inducting an interim set-up under his supervision in his address to the nation on his return from Kathmandu, where he is currently trying to meet Indian leaders to discuss the ongoing situation. Once inducted, the interim prime minister would be asked to choose his cabinet with a couple of federal ministers retaining their current portfolios, the sources added.

The responsibility of the interim PM and his team will be to run the country? Or just be a civilian face? Or, hopefully, to prepare for and conduct elections in the time-frame.

Either way, I don't know much about the Soomro fellow, except that he seems to have an unfortunately too familiar and too political last name. Is he related to all those Soomros whose faces we have been seeing in all the political setups todate? The Sindhi Wadera family? Or is he someone different?

Because if he is a part of the Sindhi wadera political setup, then obviously its just more of the same politicians we love to hate.

There is some kharabi of niyyat in this statement. Obviously we can't have an elected interim set-up to supervise elections. They were bound to be nominated, so what does the above statement means? I hope it doesn't mean that the government is planning to post-pone the elections and kaam chalaao with the interim civilian setup for the forseeable future.

Malik, the news article does not mention elections in 9 months. I hope what you wrote in your opening paragraph holds true.
