President Musharraf holds discussions with all major political leaders.

An excellent political move by the President which will help to build a national consensus in the present crisis.

Especially significant is that the government has also invited the PML (Nawaz) to these discussions, and made contacts with Benazir Bhutto and the PPP. We need as broader national consensus as possible in these times.

President holds indepth discussion with politicians

President General Pervez Musharraf on Sunday held indepth discussions with leaders of various political parties on the current situation. Leaders from the maintstream political parties like PML,Millat Party, MQM, JUP, ANP, Tehreek- e-Insaf, Pakistan Awami Tahreek and Tehreek-e-Istaqlal attended.

During the meeting, President General Pervez Musharraf apprised the political leaders about the current tension between India and Pakistan. He said Pakistan is working for peace and intends to defuse tension arising out of the Indian military build-up on our borders. However, he categorically said that if any aggression is launched against Pakistan, our armed forces are fully capable of defending the sovereignty of Pakistan.

"I stand here addressing the people of India now through you that Pakistan stands for peace," he said while talking to reporters. "Pakistan wants peace, Pakistan wants to reduce tensions, Pakistan wants to de-escalate. Let the relationship between Pakistan and India move towards peace and harmony."

"But having said that, Pakistan has taken all counter-measures," he added. "If any war is thrust on Pakistan, Pakistan's armed forces and 140 million people of Pakistan are fully prepared to face all consequences with all their might."

Without doubt, we currently have the best man for the job at the helm in these difficult times!

But why is he not talking to JSQM or other such Sindh parties (other then PPP). If he can talk to MQM, he can also talk to JSQM I would think. They're both the same parties anyway.

                  LOL 2b

Well the meeting between the President and the politician's went very successfully. Good job Mr President. This is what the News has reported:-

The politicians 100 percent endorsed Afghan and India policies of the government," said a senior official referring to discussion and speeches made in the Musharraf-politicians consultative meeting. "We stand firm behind the government," said former speaker Elahi Buksh Soomro. "We are all united and we would defend the country altogether," said Tahirul Qadri. Ghinwa Bhutto, widow of Murtaza Bhutto, said that there are specific reasons of Indian belligerency, while Pakistan is displaying utmost restraint. MQM leader Aftab Shaikh fully supported the government endeavour of taking necessary counter measures against Indian buildup.

General Musharraf briefed the participants on the forces preparedness to counter any threat. He said Pakistan is pursuing peace and tolerance. He said that five out of eight divisions of Indian Eastern Command have started moving towards west close to Pakistani borders. He also shared some sophisticated points with politicians on the Afghan policy and appreciated the role of politicians for standing with him at this critical juncture.

He said: "We hope for the best, but are prepared for the worst." He added: "I am grateful to all of you present here for showing concern and expressing national solidarity." He lamented some politicians decision not to attend the meeting.

About 40 leaders of different parties including the Pakistan Muslim League, Millat Party, Tehrik-e-Insaaf, Pakistan Awami Tehrik, Muttehda Qaumi Movement, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan and Awami National Party attended the meeting. The meeting was convened by the president to evolve a consensus on the national defence and security.

                    Truly excellent news.
He can talk to them all he wants.
It doesn't mean that they influence his judgement.

Yes, and it's a sign of the political maturity of Pakistan under Musharraf that all major national political leaders are putting aside their differences for now, and rallying around the President. Let's hope that this stays this way for the entirety of this crisis.

Leaders assure Musharraf of full support

Actually he contacted Bhutto because PPP turned down his initial invitation as it was made to the acting leader. PPP said that they will not come unless the govt contacts their leader. By the time the govt did that, it was too late for PPP to attend in Islamabad. These politicians try to get political mileage out of everything- no matter how grave the situation.

Yes as I said it shows the vast political maturity of President Musharraf compared to the former rulers. It is just sad that some politicians are still playing petty games in this time of crisis.

Freemind hates the Military - he said so himself.
So he is blind to anything good that the military does.
