AN IMPORTANT NEWSITEM FOR OVERSEAS PAKISTANIS

    24 October 2001

According to a news item appearing in Daily Khaleej Times of Dubai (30th September) the Indian Kerala High Court has admitted a petition filed by the Pravasi Malayalee Council, an organisation of returnee emigrants in the state, seeking a direction to the government of India to take steps for getting compensation to Malayalees who returned to the state following the 1990-91 Gulf War. The claims were handled and forwarded by Special Kuwait Cell working under the Federal Finance Ministry. The Council for Petitioner alleges that many affectees have not got compensations, some complainants got only in one category while they had submitted their claims in more than one category, no recipient knows how much was received and what has been paid to him. The Council has pleaded for a direction from the court to take legal as well as diplomatic steps to ensure payments of compensation to all genuine claimants. The High Court has issued notices including one to Union Bank of Indian, Indian Overseas Bank, Syndicate Bank and State bank of India.

There had recently some 3 or 4 months back been a spade of articles appearing that many such Pakistani affectees did not get compensation due to, as per Pakistani press wordings, laxity of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation as well as of Pakistani Missions abroad.

OPF and both previous Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Sh. Rashid Ahmed and present one Umar Asghar do not tire often repeating that OPF “arranged” payment to Ops in Pakistan from UNO posing it as an extraordinary “Karnama” of OPF. Whereas fact is OPF did only perhaps collecting applications and typing names of applicants whereas it was under a UNO scheme that payment to affectees was made of every nation. The above news item is a proof that it is not merely Pakistanis who got compensation payment but Indians also got where there is no “OIF” and of course other nationalities too.

Perhaps the above news item may be of some interest to those Ops who were affected and did not get compensation.
