    Pakistan cleric charged with treason

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/wor...00/1603476.stm

The government in Pakistan has charged a high-ranking Islamic cleric with treason.
Fazal-ur Rehman, a vocal ally of the Taleban who leads Pakistan's hardline Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami (JUI) party, has been charged after calling on his followers to attack members of Pakistan's armed forces.

A helicopter carrying a senior Pakistani general was attacked by a crowd of JUI supporters on Sunday when it tried to land near the Pakistani border with Afghanistan.

Mr Rehman had been released from a week of house arrest on Sunday.

Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf, has come down hard on religious opponents of his policy of support for the American air strikes on Afghanistan.

Mr Rehman could face the death penalty.

    'Bold' Pakistan

Mr Rehman's party, whose name means Party of Islamic Clerics, denounced the charges.
"The cases have been framed against Maulana at the behest of America," said Abdul Jalil Jan, general-secretary of the JUI.

"The government will now be responsible if there are any violent protests."

The attacks on Afghanistan are aimed at uprooting Osama Bin Laden - prime suspect for the attacks on the US and his Afghanistan Taliban allies - but have enraged Pakistan's small but militant religious groups.

General Musharraf said on Tuesday that Pakistan will co-operate with the United States as long as the military campaign in Afghanistan lasts.

After talks in Islamabad with the American Secretary of State, Colin Powell, General Musharraf also outlined his vision of a future government in Afghanistan, which he said should be broad-based, including moderate members of the Taleban.

Mr Powell praised what he called General Musharraf's bold action.

I am not at all religious, but the whole point is that all people (including the religious muslims) have the right to their beliefs and to voice those beliefs.

"Fanatics", "extreme" and other such words, are just propaganda for people who have a different opinion.

"Moderate" is just someone who agrees with you.

And everyone kills for their beliefs.

Excellent move! Fazlur-Rehman threatened to attack members of the Pak Army.

              Reason enough. Period
