Ireland to help in developing information technology education, software exports: accord signed

KARACHI : Ireland has agreed to assist Pakistan in the development of information technology and consequently in boosting software exports. Ireland with a small population of 3.5 million has software exports of $ 11 billion per annum.

.......The agreement was reached during the recent visit of Minister for Science and Technology Dr Ata-ur-Rahman to Dublin in a meeting with the Irish Education Minister.

.......Giving details of the agreement at a press briefing on Saturday at the Karachi Campus of Griffith College, Dublin, Assad Hassan, chief executive of the college, said that to start co-operation in information technology Griffith College of Dublin has proposed a computing training development programme for Pakistani teachers. The objective of the programme, which is under active consideration of the Ministry of Science and Technology, is to produce graduates who can teach at all levels of computing science degree in Pakistan.

.......Speaking about the mushroom growth of IT education colleges and institutes, the Principal of Griffith College suggested that no institution should be allowed in the private sector without the approval of Ministry of Education. He said that strong action should be taken against all institutions offering degrees, diplomas and certificates without UGC approval.

.......Assad said that mandatory accreditation by government should cover not only IT related institutes but all higher education private colleges. The accreditation should ensure that the programme of study pursued by a college should have a minimum standard curriculum and its duration should be nationally and internationally recognised. All such institutions should have adequate facilities, in terms of classrooms, faculty, lab, campus and other resources. Also, the syllabus should meet Pakistan's cultural and social norms.

.......Griffith College, Karachi, is an outreach campus of Griffith College, Dublin, Ireland, offering tertiary level education in computing science as well as Business studies. The basic entry requirement is 12 years of schooling. It is also introducing from this year two new programmes which include a post-graduate diploma course for one year for graduates in arts, commerce and science and to train them in information technology. The post-graduate diploma (PGD) will be acceptable anywhere in the world and if the students desire they can complete on MS in computing science in one year from Karachi or abroad.

.......Griffith College, Karachi, is not just an Irish affiliated institution but has visiting professors from the mother college. Examination papers are set and answer-books are checked in Griffith College, Dublin, in order to make its degrees internationally recognised.

.......The College is located in a spacious campus at F-14 Khayaban Saadi, Block 5, Clifton.
