    WONDERFUL COMMERCIAL STRATEGY

APP on 23rd July has carried a news item from Islamabad quoting Communication Minister Javed Ashraf Qazi that wearimg pf uniforms by postmen has been made mandatory and that Rs. 4 new postal envelope has been introduced which has a space for commercial advertisement and that postal department will now adopt commercial strategy.

Postal department and commercialism? I thought postal department is and is rightly supposed to be “public service” oriented.

However I wish to know from the respected innovative Minister when would Rs. 3/- postal envelope will be made available at Post Offices which would take my mail by “Air Mail” as present Rs. 4/- envelopes as per Postal Department tariff are meant for “Surface Mail” postage and in this age of speed internet and I-technology I am not mad to spend Rs. 4/- on slow surface mail whereas department has prescribed quicker airmail postal service at less rate namely Rs. 3/-.

Can any learned reader can tell if there is any other country in the world where surface mail rates are more tand airmail rates less.

Isn't it feasible that the cost overhead of collecting and transporting mail between many surface points, over several days can be higher than just throwing it all on one plane and getting it overwith within a few hours ?

In any case if you are getting air mail which is faster than surface mail for a cheaper price then why are you complaining ??

Really understanding what is written is not everybody's job as far as www.pak.org gupshup members are concerned the example is TTank - probably an empty tank.

SAJ has said a very meaningful thing, he has pointed out to a mistake - in fact a jok by postal authorities and TTank who appears to be from that class which knows knows about thrilling, danace fashon and why people do not eat cake if they do not have bread.

SAJ I do appreciate your point. Keep carrying on such matters.

Anjash....the folks at the postal department are not exactly goons And Ttank is right as well.

        S.A.J.
you are pointing to an issue that is feasible to you as an individual....perhaps to many other citizens are well, whos contact with the post office is limited to 'usage'. However, the postal department, in order to provide that 'usage' to you, the consumer, has to 'run' it. And there are a variety of factors that figure in it.

Surface mail at this time, is still more used, and more needed in Pakistan than is Airmail. And surface mail costs more in Pakistan because of the extra manpower and manual labor needed to get it done. Airmail gets done by the bulk, which is why it costs less. Pakistan doesnt have that many airports, hence airmail is not a common internal phenomenon.

and postal service is public service, but they need funding as well. And if in order to provide better service, they have chosen to use advertisments on their envelopes, I dont see anything wrong with it, so long as it doesnt slow down the mailing process, which I dont think it will.
Many other countries of the world use envelope advertisemt strategies as well.

Anjash if you going to attempt sarcasm at least try to be coherent.

Two points were raised in SAJ’s post first that of airmail being cheaper than surface and second of commercialization of a public service. The first may seem a bit strange but is not illogical. Secondly, in all likelihood running the postal service more in line as a commercial enterprise will raise more revenue and improve service. So I don’t see any problem there...

Now what great depth of wisdom did you see in SAJ's post ? Perhaps you'd care to explain it to us less intellectually gifted gupshup members.

I think the Postal Service recently chartered couple of jets from Russia for daily non-stop mail delivery service from various Pakistani cities to Dubai. Steps like this is certainly to improve seervice and cut-down on delivery time. Most of the post offices will be inter-connected within next two-three years, streamlining day-to-day operations.
