    Pakistan's Internet Bandwidth Increases Swiftly

    Pakistan's bandwidth has been
increased by 600 percent with the inauguration of STM-I link to the United
    States on Friday.

This was announced by Minister for Science and Technology Atta-ur-Rahman while
addressing the inauguration of Synchronous Transmission Mode (STM) I link at
Pakistan Telecommunication Headquarters here on Friday.

Atta said that Pakistan has now world-class IT infrastructure.Six months ago
Internet was available only in 29 cities and today it is available in 410 cities
    of the country, he said.

Atta said it is his mission to provide universal Internet access at affordable
prices to all parts of the country so that benefits of this technology do not
remain limited to certain circles of people.

He said that low tariff for bandwidth will be linked with the quality of ISPs
(Internet Service Providers) and exports and performance of software houses.

    Dang that is an improvement.
    Huge improvement.
But Ehsan Bhai could you explain the significance of the STM-I link to the United
    States??

Fantastic. Improvements in IT have been by the bulk in Pakistan since the advent of this current government. Great job.

        States??

Im not Ehsan Bhai, but I believe STM means that the speed of data transfer will be the same, both upstream and downstream, as opposed to ATM(asynchronous transfer mode), where the downstream data speed is fine, but the upstream speed is much slow.
What it basically means is that web sites hosted on servers that are physically based in Pakistan will be just as quickly accessible worldwide, and pakistani companies and clients wont have to pay megabucks to US webhosts in order to host their sites, just so they can get reliable hookups without any downtime.

        Good job Pak.

And whats the source of the article.

And what cable is it through (Sat?! naah)?
The only cable connection to Pk is SMW3, which terminated at khi last year. It took a year to setup an stm link-up?
