SMOKE & POLES STILL IN MIDDLE OF ROAD AND WILL REMAIN THERE

A photograph on 3/1/2001 has appeared (DAWN) showing right in middle of a very busy road installed a telephone cabinet which is a traffic hazard. If the reporter or the editor of newspaper think those who matter with the subject or should see it and do something practical have seen it and done something, then they are fool to think this. Such photographs or news items are only for common readers and not for concerned authorities.

In one of early 90s Karachi night riding a cycle I collided with a street light electric pole installed some 3-4 feet inside a very busy road. Of course as usual there was no bulb on the pole. I was a little injured. I approached Federal Ombudsman Karachi that similar electric and telephone poles were seen almost in every part of city. Ombudsman as usual issued a directive to remove such poles.

Every year when I came to Karachi amused myself on the system seeing poles still erected inside the road and more particularly to my last visit in 1998 the pole which injured me still there.

Mid 90s perhaps suo moto or on some human rights petition Supreme Court of Pakistan directed Karachi administration to stop running on the road smoke omitting auto rickshaws by a target date. Incidentally I was in Karachi before dead date. Sitting in a rickshaw I enquired the driver what would he do because his rickshaw was too old. The reply from illiterate Balouch brother was thought provoking and a point to ponder. His wordings precisely were “Babu, the judge has done his duty, he will never remember what he ordered and in fact sitting in his car coming to court via too busy Burns Road and Saddar his eyes will never catch smoke being omitted by a rickshaw passing his car”.

The photograph of 3/1/2001 reminds me illiterate driver. I often see such photographs and I am sure such newspapers also pass on tables of ombudsman secretariat on expense of we the citizens but surely ombudsman office officials have forgotten what order they issued some 8-10 years back. On their ways to office and back I am confident such poles never come into their sight. They remain busy in their cars like our finance minister remained busy reading most important national files and did not realise his destination Lahore had arrived but remained sitting in plane which then took him to Karachi. We may create presidentship, socialisim, Nazims or Shurah etc, system will remain the same, rickshaws will keep omitting smoke, roads will keep having installed poles middle of road and so on.
