Qazi demands resignation of Musharraf
ISLAMABAD: Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed Friday demanded the resignation of Chief Executive General Pervaiz Musharraf for releasing ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif after an underhand deal.
The Jamaat said it would hold a nationwide day of protests tomorrow against Gen Musharraf's surprise decision. "Pervaiz Musharraf must resign immediately, while there is still time to do so honourably, in order to restore national sovereignty and the armed forces' honour," he said in a statement, adding the government committed a rape of justice and trampled upon court verdicts.
"This government can go to any extent under external pressures and sell out the country," he said. "They have become a security risk. They themselves are involved in corruption. They cannot give good governance or carry out accountability." He demanded an interim government to hold general elections and transfer the power to elected representatives.
Talking to BBC Qazi Hussain said: "In our Constitution and law there is no provision for sending any person into exile. There is no moral or legal justification to send a criminal abroad by setting all the court proceedings and laws and Constitution aside."
He said General Musharraf has also ignored the slogan of accountability which he had raised at the time of take-over. "Now there is not at all any justification for Musharraf to remain in the office of the chief executive," he said.
When asked if Gen Musharraf resigns, what will be the procedure to run the government affairs, he said a large number of honest and trustworthy people are present in the country and everyone will be better than Gen Musharraf. These honest people can hold elections in the country as well, he added.
