    Pakistani children's grim prospects

Malnutrition and disease kill many Pakistani children

    By Susannah Price in Islamabad
The United Nations Children's Agency has launched this year's "State of the World's Children" report, which reveals that Pakistan has the highest mortality rate for children under five in South Asia, due mainly to malnutrition and simple infections.

The health problems for a large proportion of Pakistan's children begin at birth.

The United Nations figures show one quarter of newborn babies in Pakistan are underweight.

This can lead to a vicious circle, whereby the babies are too weak to breast-feed, leading to further health problems and malnutrition.

Their low weight leaves them vulnerable to infectious diseases. Even an easily treatable condition, such as diarrhoea, kills 250,000 children each year.

    Rural neglect

One of the main factors is the early age at which girls in rural areas start having children.

Young mothers mean many babies are born underweight

This means their babies are often underweight and the problems caused by malnutrition may not show up until it is too late.

Parents in rural villages are reluctant to spend time and money taking their children to health centres for vaccinations and routine check-ups unless they are extremely sick.

    Health funding 'in danger'

Health care in Pakistan is the responsibility of provinces and districts, who say they are underfunded.

The little money available is often spent on large hospitals, rather the local projects aimed at prevention, rather than cure.

Pakistan's efforts to improve its economy, as demanded by the international community, will not improve matters.

One health worker said social services were always an easy target for cuts, but the government had to make children a priority.

In India there a 100,000,000+ children who will never go to school in there life time, several 100million will work as bonded labour during their lifetime and 400,000,000 ppl will not have enough to feed themselves today.

Yet India spends billions on arms, maintains a million man+ army, has 700,000 troops killing ppl in Kashmir and was the only country in the region which turned a blind eye to soviet genocide of the Afghans during their invasion.

It is India which had been up in arms against Pakistan from the day of its birth. So don't go twisting the facts. Pakistan has its share of poverty related problems. But no where near the magnitude as in India.

This is a problem in all of the third world and will not be solved out of the blue unless the west helps in more than spirit.
      But thanks for the info.

of course more poverty exists in india
compared to pakistan. pakistan is fast aproaching to india's level due to high
population growth than india's and higher %
of defense spending compared to india.
