Islamic oil pressure : Iran, Pak force pipe on unwilling India?

That is the view of many in the Indian government who fear that Pakistan's regionl position will be enhanced by the Oil pipeline. And crucially Indian energy supplies will be at the mercy of Pakistan and Iran!

    Ministries oppose oil Pipeline

New Delhi, Nov. 12: Several key Ministries are at loggerheads over a US$ 800 billion oil pipeline project originating in Iran and cutting through Afghanistan and Pakistan, even as Iran, Pakistan and the Reliance lobby are trying hard to get India involved in it.
Confidential government sources report that the Home Ministry and the Defence Ministry are totally against the project, whereas the Ministry of External Affairs and the Petroleum Ministry support it, urging that it may provide a major economic and diplomatic breakthrough for the region.

Strategic analysts point out that a key question will be that of funding. “Who is going to raise the massive money involved? Carefully examine this factor and you will understand Iran’s and Pakistan’s urgency to rope India into the project — or to milk India via the project, depending on the way you look at it,” said an analyst.

He said that the minimum expenditure for an onshore pipeline will be US$ 10-12 billion while an offshore pipeline will cost only about US$ 3-4 billion. Defence sources say that the Ministry of External Affairs and the Petroleum Ministry are gunning for an offshore pipeline but are prepared to go onshore if the former proves unviable. Iranian and Pakistani authorities, however, are dead set on an onshore pipeline and are lobbying hard for the passage of this deal.

The onus for financing the project will lie solely with India. But with the pipeline passing through troubled regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, will the oil ever reach India? The Pakistan Foreign Minister had recently said, “We are ready for a pipeline deal with Iran even if India is not.” He has called several times for Indian involvement in the deal.

Several key Pakistani politicians have variously demanded and requested Indian involvement. Iran, due to its peculiar status in the international community, cannot muster the finance Nor can Pakistan, which is facing economic bankruptcy. The onus for financing the deal is going to lie solely with India.

Absoultely stupid and ignorant of the benefits it will provide to India but they are more obsessed with hatred for Pakistan i.e that it will boost Pakistani power in the region.

I have to say for a supposed emerging world power, it seems a little paranoid...

The politicans back in india are crooked we know. But they are smart too ..and also the country runs on a consensus.
Before they take a decision they would have worked out all combinations of events which could happen in the future and if the returns from the project far outweigh the
              -ves then who cares.
Also according to the article mosft of the money has to be put in by india. We indians (especially the current generation) pride in taking lots of risk, one more does not matter.
The final conclusion is if it makes strict BUSINESS SENSE who the hell cares whether you are sleeping with the enemy. Every hooker has a price. But some come with AIDS...some come clean. One needs to take appropriate protection.

Now apparently Bangladesh has turned down a plan to build a gas pipeline to India - that forces India to rely COMPLETLY on a Pakistani pipeline!

Sad to see that we India's worst enemy are the only land source for oil to the country.

Sad but lets be optimists? Maybe this will make India more willing to compromise on issues of contention between us including Kashmir?

If India sees sense over Kashmir then the Gas pipelines could herald major economic benefits for all in the region...
