MR ALTAF HUSSAIN’S MESSAGE TO THE NATION ON THE 53RD INDEPENDENCE DAY OF PAKISTAN 12 August 2000
    London
In his thought provoking message for 14 August, the Independence Day of Pakistan, Mr Altaf Hussain, MQM Founder and Leader has said, “my message on the occasion of the Independence Day is not only for the public but also for the religious and political leaders, intellectuals, writers, poets, social leaders, religious scholars and for people from all walks of life. People can agree or disagree with the questions I have raised and the facts I have stated. Those who disagree with me can send me their criticism through mail at the following address:”

Addressing the nation Mr Hussain said that Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), the political party that emerged from the poor and middleclass masses, was never accepted by the Pakistani Establishment, the Army and the Inter Services Intelligence Agency (ISI). Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) is the third largest political party of the country and the second largest in the province of Sindh. However, the MQM was never given its due share, in accordance with its public mandate, on the Pakistani and the international media. For example, recently the MQM organised two historic congregations in Pakistan – i.e. in Karachi on 1 July 2000 and on 3 August 2000 in Hyderabad, the second largest city of the province of Sindh. These congregations took place to highlight the life of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and were organised under the title of “Zikr-e-Mustafa PBUH”. Renowned religious scholars of all sects and maslak (school of thought) and popular Naat Khwans attended these congregations. But none of these important programs were shown on the Pakistani Television. Similarly on several important occasions, particularly at the time of the General Elections, the MQM despite having a massive public mandate was never given its due share on the radio or the television. However, on the contrary, the radio and the television has been utilised to malign the image of the MQM and to present it as a “terrorist” party, in a vindictive manner which has never been seen against any other political party.
The question beg for an answer, as to why and for what reasons? Why the minds of the simple people of Pakistan are poisoned against the MQM? Mr Hussain asked. Efforts were made to present Altaf Hussain and the MQM leaders as “terrorists” and “anti-State”. On 19 June 1992, an army operation was launched against the MQM and the Mohajir nation, which continues even today. Mr Hussain asked, “Why was this army operation launched against the MQM? Why the United States of America did not stop this unconstitutional act (i.e. operation against the 22 million Mohajirs)? May be it is because instead of working for the solidarity of the country, our armed forces work to serve the American interest. For example, be it the issue of the massacre of Palestinian Muslims in Jordan or the issue of the bloodbath of the Muslims of Somalia or the issue of insurgency in Indonesia – our army without any hesitation always says “yes sir” and arrive there on the US command. Similarly, be it the issue of LTTE in Sri Lanka – our army is always ready without any hesitation. Afghanistan was an independent country. As a result of the role of our army in Afghanistan during the war with the Soviet Union, the ordinary Afghan people have now turned against Pakistan. The US in collusion with the ISI established the Taliban Government in Afghanistan. Now, Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban are no longer in the good books of the US and the Army. A large sum of money has been announced as reward for the arrest of Osama Bin Laden but the US is keeping silence over the recruitment offices being opened in Karachi for the training of recruits for Jihad by the Jihadi Organisations. Why? What have the 22 million Mohajirs and the MQM done against the US and the Pakistan Army?
In our country, the religious parties and their student wings openly display and use the arms, commit acts of terrorism in the educational institutes and open fire at the opposition student organisations. So why did the Army and the US not brand these religious parties as “terrorists”? Instead of labelling them as “terrorists”, the leaders of these religious parties are invited to the US and provided with VVIP protocol. Why?
As a result of the illegal army operation against the MQM, it has been made impossible for its leaders, workers and their family members to live in their homes, thousands of its leaders and workers have been extra-judicially murdered. However, US and the international human rights organisations did not play the role they were expected to play against such atrocities.
The army alleged that the MQM was involved in the creation of “Jinnahpur”, but there was no truth in this allegation. When the army, paramilitary rangers and police commit extra-judicial murders of MQM leaders, workers and supporters, humiliate the Mohajir elders, disgrace the mothers and sisters; and abuse them then the reaction to this oppression is a natural phenomenon. Therefore, it is unfair to blame the entire MQM, its leadership and its workers for this reaction against such atrocities. According to the law of nature every action has a reaction. What was the outcome when the white police personnel beat up a black in Los Angeles? Arson, destruction and loss of billions of dollars. Did the US Establishment, in reply to this destruction, use the military against the entire black community? No, certainly not.
Our only crime is that we got the poor and middleclass elected and send them as our representatives to the parliament and assemblies, spoke for the abolishment of the feudal system, true democracy in the country, to abolish the dual educational system and design it along latest scientific methods, for equal treatment to all the smaller provinces, provide justice to all, respect the women and provide them their rights, provide respect, protection and rights to the religious minorities, end child labour, provide clean drinking water and medical facilities to the poor, end corruption from the country and we also spoke openly for the sectarian harmony etc. However, the Establishment did not like our views. The Army and the Establishment considered the emergence of the poor and middleclass in the politics of the country as a threat to their hegemony. Therefore, an army operation was launched to crush the MQM. Instead of punishing those responsible for the extraworkers, supporters and their relatives, they were rewarded by the Establishment. Mohajirs as a nation were -judicial murders of MQM leaders, called in derogatory termsbad blood, cowards and rats., such as having
The Massacre of Aligarh and Qasbah Colony occurred on 14 December 1986, where for six hours, the armed assailants carried out the massacre of Mohajirs. During the Aligarh and Qasbah Massacre, hundreds of Mohajir youth, elders, children, mothers, sisters and daughters were ruthlessly murdered. Hundreds of Mohajir daughters were not only raped but they were chopped to pieces after being raped. Hundreds of innocent people were murdered and injured but no investigation was carried out. None of the murderers have ever been apprehended. On 30 September 1988, Hyderabad witnessed the bloodbath. More than 200 persons were murdered and thousands were injured but no investigation was carried out. None of the murderers were apprehended. On 26 and 27 May 1990, in an organised armed attack at the Pacca Qila in Hyderabad, the second largest city of the Sindh province, hundreds of innocent and helpless Mohajirs were brutally killed and injured. It is worth mentioning that at the time of the attack, the entire city was under curfew and in control of the Army. All modes of communication were cut-off, gas and electricity lines were disconnected by the attackers and the manslaughter continued for several hours. Hundreds of houses were looted, hundreds of women were raped. When those helpless women came out with the Holy Quran over their heads asking the terrorists to stop in the name of Allah, the cruel armed attackers opened indiscriminate fire upon them not only killing and injuring dozens of women but also sacrilaging the Holy Quran. The height of cruelty was that the injured were not allowed to be taken to the hospitals and even the dead bodies of the poor victims were not allowed to be removed from the scene. Eventually they had to be buried within the compound of the Pacca Qila. The question is that when the entire city was under curfew and the army troops were in control of the streets, how did the armed assailants dare to come in the presence of the Army to attack a Mohajir locality? No investigation was carried out. None of the murderers were apprehended. In 1981, the Islami Jamiat-e-Tuleba, at gunpoint, forced the Mohajir students organisation, the All Pakistan Mohajir Student Organisation (APMSO), out of the University of Karachi and other educational institutions of the city. We were deprived of education. However, no investigation was carried out and none of the attackers were apprehended. Why? Who is responsible? Please do give me answers of these questions.
Now let us talk about the Independence Day. Fifty-three (53) years have gone by since the creation of Pakistan. Our country is entering into her 54th year. Today we should hold ourselves accountable, including myself, as to what have we given to Pakistan in the past 53 years? What have we achieved and what have we lost during this time? I would like to ask one question to the nation and the national leaders, was Pakistan created for the military or the military was established for Pakistan? Every patriotic citizen of Pakistan should resolve this issue once and for all. Was Pakistan created for the 100 million Muslims of the Subcontinent or for the Army? Are the 140 million people of Pakistan “traitors” and their patriotism is in doubt? Is it that only and only the armed forces are loyal to Pakistan and they are its true defender? God Forbid, are the 140 million people of Pakistan “satans” and the Pakistani Army generals “angels”? Was the country disintegrated by the people of Pakistan or the Army? Was it the Army who surrendered or was it the nation as a whole? It is the irony of fate that instead of calling them the “defeated”, those who surrendered were awarded with the title of “Ghazi” (Hero)? Is it the nation or the armed forces who are responsible to defend our borders? Be it the issue of withdrawal from Kargil or the independence of Kashmir – are the people responsible for it or the armed forces? Since the Army has ruled the country, directly or indirectly, for the past 53 years, then who is responsible for the deteriorating economic situation of the country – people or the Army? Is it only the political leaders who are involved in corruption and the high-ranking officers of the army are pious, living in hardship and facing starvation? Was it the public, any political leader or the ISI, who provided the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) with 140 million rupees? Why no accountability of this matter has been conducted so far? Does the army has the divine right to distribute the plundered wealth? All this is being carried out under the pretext of “in the larger interest of the country”. Why is the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) silent over the Mehran Bank Scandal? Why it has not taken any action?
There is a great deal of propaganda in favour of accountability and outlandish claims are made. Accountability is good for the nation. The corruption must end but the accountability process should not be confined to catch only the small fish and let the big fish roam free under the pretext that the NAB does not have the net big enough to catch the big fish. It is correct that there is widespread corruption in the country and that our country is amongst the top of the list of the most corrupt countries of the world. Let us analyse how the national exchequer is distributed in the national budget. Seventy (70) percent of the country’s budget is given to the Army and the rest of the thirty (30) percent is kept for the civil institutions. If we suppose that those receiving the 30 percent are responsible for corruption then simply 30 percent of the country’s economy should have suffered. However, the entire economy of the country has deteriorated, so where will we place the Army, which receives 70 percent of the country’s budget. Is it not true that kickbacks and commissions are received on sale and purchase of Mirage fighter planes, F-16s, tanks, submarines and other military equipments? The GHQ should inform the nation that how many army generals have been and are involved in receiving heavy kickbacks and commission during the dealings of military hardware and other equipments, and how many have so far been punished by the accountability departments of the military? When the accountability of the army personnel is demanded, the answer we receive is that the Army has its own mechanism of accountability. Why? Is Army not an institution of the country? Or is it above the Constitution and law of the land? Throughout the civilised world, audit of the military accounts is carried out as a matter of routine but in our country, the military accounts cannot be audited by the civilian governments. When the Army does not allow the civilian governments and departments to interfere in their functions then under what law and constitution do they themselves interfere in the matters of the civilian governments. If NAB is really determined to rid the country of corruption then it should also ask the army to provide the accounts for the 70 percent of the national budget it spends and carry out accountability of all the corrupt military personnel.
Whenever the army wants it topples the elected governments and takes over control – so, why the country has not progressed and developed under army control? Where did the sons of the army generals amass billions of rupees from? On what courageous acts are the army generals given 40 million rupees worth of assets each on retirement? Is there an army general in the country who does not have assets worth millions of rupees, 4 to 5 valuable plots of land, cooks, gardeners and battalion of servants to attend their children and assist their wives in their shopping. The privileges enjoyed by these army officials continue even after the retirement and they are appointed as ambassadors in foreign countries or appointed on high posts in the national institutions receiving huge salaries. In this manner they do not retire even after their official retirement.
The country was disintegrated into two and the Hamood Ur Rehman Commission Report has been pushed under the carpet but none of the army generals were punished. Today, are the courts independent and autonomous? Does the Army come under the law of the courts or the courts of the country are also ruled by the Army? If someone argues that the Army is also under the law of the courts and answerable to the courts then why did the courts of the country and specially the higher courts not hold the generals accountable for disintegrating the country? It appears that the armed forces have been given powers by the US to carry out legitimate or illegitimate acts. The Army ruled the country for more than 25 years under the martial law, abrogated three constitutions of the country and toppled the elected governments at the drop of a hat. The process of Accountability should be carried out but it should also be explained that on what acts of bravery and conquests, thousands of acres of land in the province of Sindh has been awarded to the army generals? The Army industries produce and sell fake Coca Cola, Seven-up and other drinks in the country. Who will hold the army accountable for this fraud? For years thousands of MQM leaders and workers are languishing in prisons on false and fabricated charges. How many personnel of the army, paramilitary rangers and police responsible for the extra-judicial murders of more than 15000 Mohajir youth have been arrested and punished? In Karachi, four American employees of Union Texas and members of the US diplomatic corps were murdered. MQM workers were falsely framed in these cases and awarded death sentences by the Anti Terrorist Courts (ATC) (Kangaroo Courts). These courts were created to crush the political opponents. For the past several weeks, advertisement are appearing in Pakistani newspapers, placed by US Government, offering rewards for the information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder of the US citizens. The US Authorities also conducted their own investigation and declared MQM workers as innocent. We are grateful to the US Government for declaring MQM workers as innocent of these killings, at the same time we appeal to them to ask the Government of Pakistan to release innocent MQM workers who were awarded death sentences by the Kangaroo Courts.
Here I would like to clarify that we are not the enemy of the US. We want to encourage US investment along with the investment by Britain, France, Germany, Japan and any other country’s investors to invest in Pakistan. We would also like the US not to allow a free hand to the Pakistan Army to carry out illegitimate acts. Pakistan Army has played havoc with the civil life in the country by imposing Martial Law and in decimating democracy, but the World Bank and IMF has continued its Aid Program on humanitarian grounds. Why has the World Bank and the IMF not exercised any pressure on humanitarian grounds for the release of thousands of prisoner of conscience in Pakistani jails? In the 1956 Constitution, the Bengalis accepted the rule of parity although they were in majority. Despite that the Bengalis were declared as traitors. In the General Elections of 1970, Awami League won the elections with overwhelming majority. Instead of handing them power, the military government launched an operation against the Bengalis. In that operation, thousands of Bengalis were massacred and thousands of Bengali women were raped. However, the international community and all the human rights organisations of the world could not stop the genocide of Bengalis and eventually the country was dismembered. Why was it allowed to happen?
Similarly, when the Baloch raised their voice for their rights, they were also crushed by the Army by killing thousands of Baloch and even today Baloch loyalty is suspected in the eyes of the Army. In all the government departments in Balochistan, minimal number of indigenous people are employed – most vacancies are filled from outside Balochistan. Accordingly, in 1983, when the struggle for the rights of Sindh started, the Army moved in, killing thousands of Sindhis, even those reciting the Holy Quran were not spared. Now for the last eight years a military operation is being carried out against the Mohajir nation. Thousands of families have become homeless, thousands are incarcerated in prisons, many thousands have fled the country and scores of MQM workers have disappeared without trace. We wonder as to why the US Government turns a blind eye to such atrocities and human rights violations?
Once again a military operation against Pashtoons and Balochs have commenced in Balochistan – indiscriminate arrests and torture has begun. Police and army come searching for weapons but they do not take action against those who are blatantly manufacturing and distributing weapons within the country. Why and what do they fear?
Kashmir has also been turned into a political football; as a result, thousands of Kashmiri lives have been lost. The army, should liberate Kashmir instead of raiding their own civilians. They should go for Jihad instead of asking the people for Jihad. While addressing the nation Mr Altaf Hussain pointed out that he has stated the bitter realities. He said that since he has been alleged to be anti-Pakistan, it is now your duty to save the country. He also asked the people to think about the stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh who are languishing in Red Cross Camps for the past 29 years for aiding and abetting the Pakistan Army.
Addressing the people of Pakistan Mr Hussain said, “the questions I have raised are bitter and painful, do forgive me if you are offended. Since I have explained matters so openly, now my life is in imminent danger.”
The military hierarchy arrests and questions us for no reason, but who will take account of the unlimited wealth of the Army generals and question them about their luxurious life style? When is this going to happen? For how long will the US keep the armed forces at the helm of the country’s affairs? You have to think about it! This message of mine may be extensively censored but I appeal to you to distribute this message to as many people as possible. God will reward you for this good deed. I would like to bring to your knowledge that the negative propaganda that has been circulated against me is not true. I am a patriot like you, so pray for me.
Finally, I would like to appeal to the high command of the General Headquarters (GHQ) to review their policy to label or portray some people as more loyal and others as less loyal. In my opinion all the people of Pakistan are equally patriotic. Any act of discrimination and atrocities would generate revulsion not affection towards authorities. So please pay attention to my passionate appeal. Give the smaller provinces their due share, provincial autonomy and allow the people of these provinces to run the affairs of their provinces. Only then a sense of love and pluralism will emerge among people of different ethnic origin. This is essential for the integrity and solidarity of the country. If my submissions are misinterpreted and misconstrued, the spectre of history shall pass its judgement, sooner rather than later.
Mr Hussain said that there is an uproar on the thoughts expressed by Pir Sahib Pagara, the spiritual leader of Hurs, on Pakistan and its creation during an interview. To disagree with anyone’s ideas or statement is the basic right of every citizen. But to immediately label such person as the enemy of the country is wrong and negative. Until yesterday, Pir Pagara was respected by everyone, but sadly, after the publication of his interview, he is considered as a bad person by the biased people. This is not a positive way of thinking. Everyone has a right to differ with an individual’s statement particularly that of a politician. But to declare someone as a traitor because his thoughts do not coincide with your thinking is not a sane policy. Whatever I have expressed on this Independence Day is based on historical facts. Anyone can disagree with my views. But to call me disloyal to the country and a traitor is by no means correct. But if someone still calls me a traitor, it is up to him, I shall however, continue to state the facts as I see fit. I have to sit in exile for the last eight years as a punishment for telling the truth.
In the end, I once again appeal to all Pakistanis not to take my factual statement negatively. My views can be incorrect from your standpoint but they are not based on any ill intention.

        Awaz-Haq bhai,
Don't be so naive. Bal Thakeray is neither a senator nor a MNA or MPA, yet he enjoys absolute power in Bombay. He does need to be a leader as all the MNA's, MPAs and senators are under his thumb. Same is the case with your Altaf Hussain.
Altaf is not selfish as per your sentiments yet he screws up a whole Mohajir generation. Karachi and Hyderabad become a nightmare after his leadership. All mohajirs are branded as "terrorists" after the MQM debacle.
The guy sits in England to save his skin and never ventures back to Pakistan for fear of his life just like BB. So if he is such a MOHIB_E_WATAN why does he not go back to Pakitan and die with his people who are dying for him? Who is supporting him in England? The people of Karachi for the GUNDAY of MQM harrass and loot the Mohajir public to afford the lifestyle of their leader.
The guy declares the very basis of Pakistan {Two Nation Theory} as bogus and is still hailed as a patriot by his diehard followers.
Wake up and smell the coffee. Karachi is a gutter now thanks to Altaf Hussain and his cronies. Ask any one in Karachi who or whose immediate family member has not been mugged or robbed by the muttahida qaumi movement activists.
Either you are living in vaccum or are too gullible to see the truth.

This is quite a long speech I'd say. I would have actually read it, had it been from someone worth listening to! As far as Altaf Hussain goes, he is no different from any of the other politicians. And I think Politics nowhere else in the world is as corrupt as that in Pakistan and the rest of the subcontinent. Any place where there is lack of education, folks can't voice their opinion, and if they do they loose their head, I think Government has a lot to be held accountable for. Any federal agency which can't welcome criticism, speaks for how much confidence it holds in itself and how much it's willing to work for the overall goodness of it's residents. As far as Mr. Altaf Hussain is concerned, I'd say it's very easy to watch people get their heads chopped off because of u, and to then fly away when it's your time to save others'.
When I was very small, visiting Pakistan, we always used to go to those election thingys where Altaf Hussain was ever so popular. But after growing up, I did realize that he is no different from Benazir or Nawaz or any of those other ones.
There are many many folks, specially in Karachi whose lives have been altered forever because of the selfish acts of Altaf Hussain. Bhutto started the Sindhi, Punajabi, Pathan, Balochi differentiation, and Altaf took it a step further. He didn't make matters any better, nor has he served his country any better than the ones before him.

The amazing aspect about our politicians is that as corrupt and scummy they are somehow they are able to find die hard fans. Altaf, BB and Sharif has a large political following. All these scumbags are parasites and scavangers that are living off of the innocent public.
Karachi oce the rustling and bustling city of Pakistan has now turned into a gutter. The average Punjabi, Sindhi, Pathan or baluchi is not any better off than a Mohajir. Infact if you visit these places you will know how prevelidged the population of Karachi is. Altaf has played this very racial card to gain cheap popularity amongst the deprived classes of Mohajirs. Majority of the educated (by the true sense of the world)urdu-speaking population of Pakistan despices him. There is not a single leader of MQM that is a true depiction of the educated elite of Karachites.

Yes the people of Karachi chose the leadership of MQM from amongst themselves. Look where it landed them. Also has your leader altaf Hussain done any job ever since becoming the leader of MQM. i mean how does he survive. Who pays his bills etc. Is he working in England or living off of the money of the people of Karachi? Just like how the "waderas" live off of the people that work for them. So what is the difference between your innocent leader and the Waderas of the "establishment"(another pet word for the MQM followers)
