Yes his name is Z A Bhutto. Perhaps he was even popular than Quaid-e-Azam. I can imagine intensive hate for him by some but he still lives in the heart of many and I can also imagine their intensive love for him. People who hate him always try to copy his style of presentation for getting public attention. Even his daughter has cashed his popularity to get as many votes as she wanted. Though she did not even use 1% of his intelligence, successfully became PM of Pakistan for two times using his name. Believe me she will still use her father’s charms and attract voters whenever she gets a chance to run for free, impartial elections.
The election of 1970 brought a faint hope that Pakistan would be set for democracy after military/bureaucratic dictatorship for 23 years. Unfortunately dictator of the time did not realize what he was doing when he refused to hand over the government to majority elected party. At that time racism, cultural differences dominated over Islamic Brother hood. That was complete Failure of so called Two Nation Theory. ZA Bhutto also played negative role in this whole debacle. Instead of becoming party to dictatorship, he should have used his vision and intelligence by pressing the dictator of the time to hand over power to winning party. After six years, he paid heavy price for achieving his short-term goal of grabbing power.
Zia-ul-haq, whom I always call him Amir-ul-Shiateen, hanged him just for personal reasons. That son of a *****, due to his personal hatred, was stunt to see his popularity when he was put to jail second time. That coward general’s ass exploded when he saw that a person who was just removed from office for rigging of elections on few seats, became so popular. When his (ZAB’s) wife lead a public procession between Jehlum and Rawlapindi, military helicopter relayed message to coward general that there was no space empty and mammoth crowd had came to hear her speech. The whole fifteen square mile area was jam packed with the people and still millions were coming in-groups from different directions. General noticing that his ass was on line took immediate decision to postpone the elections forever. That ******* ruled the country for 11 years destroyed very fabric of democracy and institutions. Pakistan perhaps will never see real democracy in future.
I can quote one incident of his popularity when he was visiting Karachi in 1973 or in 1974. Muhajirs of Karachi never liked him I do not know why? Perhaps it was again a cultural thing. ZAB had skill of how and what to speak in front of listeners keeping in view the type and kind. Muhajirs of Karachi once challanged him that he was attracting a mammoth crowd whenever he wanted to. But he dared not even to pass through Lalu Khet, a densely populated area with Muhair community. . He accepted the challenge. When he was passing through that area, he asked the driver to stop. (Perhaps it was Al-Azam Square). He got off the car and started to deliver his speech. After some time he could see the displeasure of people by saying “Bhutto Murdabad”. But he just continued his speech. Suddenly people including women started to show him shoes from the balconies and windows of apartment buildings. He looked at them and said,
“Yes yes, I know that shoes have become expensive, but what can I do when there is high inflation in the world economy, for which I am not responsible. I will try my best to control the prices of essential goods so that a common man can afford”.
The angered faces suddenly changed to laughing and happy faces. They already forgot their challenge and listened to him without interruption.
I must say he was the strong link among people of different provinces and he was the hope for future democracy. Perhaps Pakistan will never ever see a politician like him.
