India says battle in Kashmir cost $461m

India's Defence Minister George Fernandes, says the nation's military offensive against Islamic intruders in Kashmir earlier this year cost almost $460 million.

He said the Indian army lost 520 officers and men while five air force personnel died when a MiG fighter and a helicopter crashed during the 10-week battle that ended in July.

The fighting started after Islamic intruders crossed the Line of Control and occupied strategic peaks in Kargil.

Mr Fernandes told parliament that military deployment by India and Pakistan had been stepped up along a Line of Control, which divides the two zones of disputed Kashmir.

He also blamed Pakistan of resorting to unprovoked firing, saying cross-border shelling was inflicting casualties among Indian frontier troops.
