China to build economic and military cooperation with India and Russia.

China wants to improve relations with India.

Officials from India and China met Nov. 24 to discuss their ongoing 37-year-old border dispute. The goals of the meeting are to reduce troops along the Himalayan frontier and clearly define the shared border. The meeting is part of Beijing’s attempt to resolve longstanding border disputes in the northwest so that it can strengthen relations with bordering nations particularly India and Russia and increase internal stability.

By resolving border troubles with India, China can concentrate its attention on internal stability. Despite year-long efforts to crack down on Falun Gong activities and various economically motivated protests, dissent threatens stability. Further, by sealing the Indian border, China can stem cross-border support for insurrections in Tibet and Xinjiang.

China also wants to build economic and military cooperation with neighbors, particularly India and Russia. Such collaboration would help counter Western influence in the region. Also, the three powers could work together to increase control of Central Asia, forwarding yet another of China's broader strategic goals.
