    India's "sorry state of affairs"

Lack of leadership in all spheres of life was responsible for India's "sorry state of affairs", field marshal Sam Manekshaw said here today. Manekshaw also said India would not have been defeated at the hands of China in 1962, had the then army chief "gathered enough moral courage" to tell the political leadership that the troops were not yet ready for a war, reports PTI.

"The Indian youth is a confused, depressed and disgusted lot. They cannot understand all the miserable things that have happened and are happening in this country. They do not know whom to blame," the former army chief said in his valedictiry address at the conclusion of the three-day 'quality summit' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. He said the argument of 200 years of colonial rule behind the nation's miserable situation was "specious" as countries which were more devastated during the world wars and under imperialism have emerged as economic super powers.

"Lack of leadership in all walks of life including politics, judiciary, business, education et al is responsible for our sorry state of affairs," he said during the speech punctuated with wit, anecdotes and a liberal dose of humour. Professional knowledge and competence, the ability to take a decision and own up responsibility for it, honesty and impartiality, moral and physical courage and loyalty were "sine qua non" and cardinal attributes of leadership,he said.

Manekshaw also regretted that the present leadership though endowed with the "gift of gab" lacked a sense of humour.
