    Democracy

The following appeared in todays Times of London, 19 October,1999 by Aidan Rankin:

" As a schoolboy in the Seventies, I once sat through a mediocre Leftish play in which brainwashed children cheered vacuously when their teacher wrote the words 'democracy' and 'freedom' on the blackboard. It was, supposedly, a comment on traditional education. At the time, I found the play ridiculous and faintly sinister. Now, I think it had a point. For democracy is fast degenerating from a noble ideal into a political cliche. It need no longer be defended intellectually nor even justified on prgamatic grounds. We are all democrats now, aren't we? So much so that we deny a people the right to military rule. The campaign against Pakistan is colonialism with tht sanctimonious face and mawkish vocabulary of human rights activists. For the most striking response to last week's military coup has been the popular support for General Musharraf, and contempt for corrupt civilian politicians. So blase are ordinary Pakistanis about 'democracy' that, were they Westerners, their attitude would be called 'Post-Modern'. Proud of their independence, in a way we have forgotten, they wish to solve their country's problems as they see fit. Self-determination is the most basic of human rights and yet the human rights imperialists would seek to snatch it away."

    My feelings exactly as well.

"Nothing is in the kitty," bemoans I.A. Rehman, director of Pakistan's Human Rights Commission. "We have had a military dictatorship, we have had democracy, we have had socialism. We have reached the stage where no political theory will satisfy the people. We are a bankrupt state." Imran Khan, the Pakistani cricketer who has thus far been unsuccessful as a politician, describes the system as a "status quo of thieves safeguarding the interest of thieves from the other divide."
