Let's bury the hatchet , says Vajpayee

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Friday appealed to all Indian political parties to forget the acrimony generated during the election campaign and accept the people's verdict which showed that they wanted a stable polity, reports PTI(Press Trust of India).

"It is now the responsibility of government as well as opposition to honour this verdict," the prime minister said in a statement here thanking the people for reposing their faith in the NDA and ``our friendly parties.'' "The clear message of the verdict of 1999 is that people are looking forward to a stable polity to ensure rapid socio-economic development,'' Vajpayee said. Now that the elections were over, "we should forget the acrimony generated during the campaign", he said adding ''the mandate of 1999 reflects the maturity and wisdom of the voters: for the first time since 1984, a clear majority has been given to a contender.''

"The opposition plays a key role in a democracy and the national interest is best served when government seeks consensus through dialogue with the opposition on key issues and the opposition conducts itself in a constructive manner." the prime minister said.

Stating that free and fair elections were the test of a democracy, the prime minister said, "it gives me tremendous pleasure that India has once again passed this litmus test with flying colours and re-established our nation's unshakable commitment to democracy."

The 13th general election is over and soon a new Lok Sabha will be constituted. It has been a long campaign and now it is time to settle down so that we can return to addressing crucial issues facing the nation, he said.
