Niaz Naik controversy new stick in hands of Pakistani Opposition

Islamabad, September 18: The Niaz Naik controversy has come in handy for Pakistan’s Opposition parties, mainly the hard-line Jamaat-e-Islami which are gunning for the blood of the Nawaz Sharif government, to launch a fresh assault by accusing Sharif of ‘treason’ for undertaking secret diplomacy with India to resolve the Kashmir issue.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, in a statement, demanded that the nation should be told what solution of the Kashmir problem had been agreed upon between the prime ministers of Pakistan and India. Ahmed was reacting to comments of former foreign secretary Niaz Naik that India and Pakistan were close to resolving the Kashmir issue by September-October through secret diplomacy before it was derailed due to the Kargil crisis.

He also said that the nation wanted to know what was the proposed solution to the Kashmir issue in the light of the repeated assertions of Indian premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee that Kashmir is an integral part of India and that India will not give right of self-determination to the Kashmiri people.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had also demanded the government’s reply to Naik’s charges against the army. Ahmed also rejected Sharif’s oft-repeated statement that his government enjoys a heavy mandate saying, “no government had the authority to depart from the national stand on the pretext that it had been given a mandate by the nation”.

He added that Naik in his comment in the media had made some allegations against the Pakistan army which India had also been leveling against the army and claimed that “the record showed very clearly that the Prime Minister was fully abreast of what was happening in Kargil”.
