India Braces to Enforce Withdrawal Deadline in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 15: The Indian Army is preparing to enforce the July 16 deadline for all Mujahideen to withdraw from Indian occupied Kashmir.
Indian military officials said that troops were carefully monitoring the pull back situation of the "infiltrators" in the Kaksar and Mushkoh sectors over the Line of Control (LoC)dividing Indian and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. The Indian air force also flew numerous reconnaissance missions to
check that all the bunkers used by the "Muslim militants" had been vacated.
Senior Army officers and government officials have warned of dire consequences for any "guerrillas" found in "Indian occupied Kashmir" beyond July 16. Although Pakistan agreed to persuade mujahideen to withdraw, it has denied that any deadline was offered or accepted. Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes said that "guns will answer" any infiltrators who opt to remain in their captured positions after July 16. Meanwhile,
Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh ruled out any early resumption of talks with Pakistan, saying "we still have to cover a lot of distance" before considering a fresh dialogue.
Talking about Indo-Pakistan dialogue, the Indian foreign minister said talks would be conditional on a reaffirmation of Pakistan's faith in the LoC and a pledge to desist from "cross-border terrorism". India has suspended air strikes and the "use of certain ground weapons" during the withdrawal period.
