    US report reveals Afghan abuses
    Afghan prisoner and US soldier

The report was leaked by someone involved in the US inquiry
Fresh details have emerged of the alleged abuse of prisoners in Afghanistan by US soldiers.

The deaths of two inmates and alleged abuse of others is detailed by the New York Times citing a 2,000-page document leaked from a US army investigation.

US officials have said the incidents were isolated and have been dealt with.

The report says some prisoners were chained to ceilings and that one female interrogator stepped on a man's neck and kicked another in the genitals.

    QUICK GUIDE

    Afghanistan

The New York Times said it received the report from a person involved in the US investigation who was critical of the interrogation methods used at the detention centre at Bagram, north of Kabul, and of the subsequent inquiry.

The key issue in the report covers the treatment of two Afghans who died in custody at Bagram in December 2002.

The detainees who died were a 22-year-old taxi driver known as Dilawar and a man called Habibullah.

    'Innocent taxi driver'

The New York Times gives a detailed account from the leaked report of their treatment.

Dilawar had been chained to his cell ceiling by his wrists for four days and his legs pummelled by guards when he was brought to be re-interrogated at 0200 hours about an attack on a US air base, it says.

After the interrogation he was returned to be chained up and died before a doctor came to see him.

The report says most interrogators believed him to be an innocent taxi driver who simply drove past at the time of the air-base attack.

In earlier treatment of Dilawar, one soldier told investigators that when the prisoner was beaten: "He screamed out, Allah, Allah, Allah, and my first reaction was he was crying out to his God.

"It became a running joke and people kept showing up to give him a strike just to hear him scream Allah... It went on over a 24-hour period and I would think that it was over 100 strikes."

The US military initially said there was no indication of abuse in the two men's deaths and that interrogation techniques were methods that were "generally accepted".

Only after a later inquiry was it indicated, in October last year, that 27 soldiers faced probable criminal charges.

Seven of these have since been charged. No one has yet been convicted over the deaths of the two men.

US officials point to the detailed investigation into the abuses that has been carried out.

Pentagon spokesman Larry Di Rita told the New York Times: "What we have learned through the course of all these investigations is that there were people who clearly violated anyone's standard for humane treatment."

    Drums of excrement

The New York Times says: "The file depicts young, poorly trained soldiers in repeated incidents of abuse. The harsh treatment... went well beyond the two deaths."

It details sworn statements from soldiers about a woman interrogator who stepped on one prisoner's neck and kicked another in the genitals.

Other reported abuses included a prisoner being forced to kiss the boots of interrogators and another forced to pick plastic bottle tops out of a drum mixed with excrement and water.

One sergeant told investigators that detainees were considered terrorists until proven otherwise and that the Geneva Convention only applied to prisoners of war.

I read the article in NYTImes this morning. It is shameful as an american that we don't have the appropriately trained personnell in these situations and cause such pain, degradation and even murder among the detainees. Apologies on behalf of Americans from me, to the families of the innocents who died at the hands of these sadistic animals who were guards at Bagram, blame also needs to be applied to the higher ups who

        a) Refused to acknowledge that this is an issue
        b) Did not set up the right SOPs to ensure that precluded morons from murdering innocent people

I ma glad the NYTimes did the right thing here by showcasing the detailed littany of abuses. I am also glad that the powers that be in the armed forces charged the perpetrators with murder.

But lets hope that no protests/riots begin causing NYTimes to retract.

The article was quite detailed, not sure if you read it V. I was extremely saddened by the death of the taxi driver who seemed as if was in teh wrong place at the wrong time.

I must say though, I did not feel one bit of remorse for the brother of the taliban warlord who also died in custody. The world is a better place because of one less terrorist Mfker.

^^Dont be, good news you in Amrekkka, you can write to your congressman/woman and b1tch your heart out. If you aint in US tell your relatives that are, to write.

Matsui: Finally got to read the article, yes indeed quite saddening. However here is an excerpt for the article that seems to concern me.
Nor were the rules of engagement very clear. The platoon had the standard interrogations guide, Army Field Manual 34-52, and an order from the secretary of defense, Donald H. Rumsfeld, to treat prisoners "humanely," and when possible, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions. But with President Bush's final determination in February 2002 that the Conventions did not apply to the conflict with Al Qaeda and that Taliban fighters would not be accorded the rights of prisoners of war, the interrogators believed they "could deviate slightly from the rules," said one of the Utah reservists, Sgt. James A. Leahy.
One of them is accountable. Plus you cant give a soldier conflicting orders.

I feel sorry for the US because it has become the most hated nation on the planet. Probably the only country that has seen their flag burnt by almost every nation on the earth, I wonder what will the demise of such a nation look like, feel be like. All great things must come to past.

the arrogance of americans is bound to lead them to the deepest pit of hellfire. the detaines are killed and the hell bound american comes and starts talking about some other issue. discuss your issues in other thread, this thread is about the issue of detaines being abused and murdered in cold blood by american butchers and blood drinking vampires. i think their thrist for blood is only matched by the mongols. but atleast mongols would drink the blood of their own horse, these american bloodhounds go to some one else's home, rape the wife and kill the husband and drink the blood of the children.
