BAGHDAD: Rebels kidnapped the governor of the restive Sunni province of Al-Anbar in western Iraq on Tuesday, demanding that US forces stop an offensive in the region, security sources said.

Governor Nawaf Raja Farhan al-Mahalawi was snatched as he drove to Al-Qaim near the Syrian border from Ramadi, the sources said, according to AFP.

Two suicide car bombs exploded in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least seven Iraqis as 1,000 US forces backed by aircraft continued their large-scale offensive against insurgents in northwestern Iraq, AFP reported. Seven Iraqis were killed and 23 injured in the first attack in a busy central Baghdad street, when a suicide car bomb went off near a US patrol at 9:40am, an Interior Ministry official said. The blast, which took place a short distance away from the site of another car bomb attack that killed 18 people on Saturday, shook downtown Baghdad and sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky near the Baghdad Hotel.

Three policemen were injured when a separate suicide car bomb targeted a small base for a river patrol unit by the Tigris river in Jadriya, the official said.

Iraqi police hurled insults at US soldiers after the car bombings. “It’s all because you’re here,” a policeman shouted in Arabic at a group of US soldiers. “Get out of our country and there will be no more explosions,” he told the uncomprehending Americans. Meanwhile, the US military said on Tuesday that a total of 14 US servicemen were killed in Iraq between Saturday and Monday, making it one of the deadliest periods this year. Saboteurs attacked a crude oil pipeline complex near the Kirkuk fields in northern Iraq on Tuesday, a spokesman for the Iraqi Oil Ministry said. “It was a bomb. Crews are working on extinguishing the fire in the complex, which is part of the northern production system,” the spokesman told Reuters by phone from Baghdad.

So when will the Americans get the message and free the innocent Iraqi people?
