    Dean ends bid

Today my candidacy may come to an end--but our campaign for change is not over.

I want to thank each and every person who has supported this campaign. Over the last year, you have reached out to neighbors, friends, family and colleagues--building one American at a time the greatest grassroots campaign presidential politics has ever seen. I will never forget the work and the heart that you put into our campaign.

In the coming weeks, we will be launching a new initiative to continue the campaign you helped begin. Please continue to come to www.deanforamerica.com for updates and news as our new initiative develops. There is much work still to be done, and today is not an end--it is just the beginning.

This Party and this country needs change, and you have already begun that process. I want you to think about how far we have come. The truth is: change is tough. There is enormous institutional pressure in our country against change. There is enormous institutional pressure in Washington against change, in the Democratic Party against change. Yet, you have already started to change the Party and together we have transformed this race. Along the way, we’ve engaged hundreds of thousands of new Americans in the political process, as witnessed by this year’s record participation in the primaries and caucuses.

The fight that we began can and must continue. Although my candidacy for president may end today, the most important goal remains defeating George W. Bush in November, and I hope that you will join me in doing everything we can to support the Democrats this fall. From the earliest days of our campaign, I have said that the power to change Washington rests not in my hands, but in yours. Always remember, you have the power to take our country back.

    Gov. Howard Dean M.D.

It was only a matter of time. 0-18 is pretty dismal by any standards. I guess this clears the way for Kerry-Edwards race (or ticket?)

Kerry and Edwards both hold a double digit lead over Bush. This poll was taken even before today when the administration backed away from their prediction that the economy will add 2.6 million new jobs before the end of this year.

WASHINGTON (USATODAY.com) — Democrat John Kerry holds his largest lead yet over President Bush in a head-to-head match-up among likely voters, a new USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup poll concludes, and rival John Edwards also holds a double-digit lead over the president.

The poll, taken Feb. 16-17, indicates that if the election were held today, Kerry would be chosen by 55% of likely voters, compared to 43% for Bush. In the last polling, Feb. 6-8, Bush held a 49-48 advantage.

Edwards, Kerry's sole remaining major rival for the Democratic nomination, holds a 54%-44% advantage, the poll indicates. The question has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

utd... your point is well taken... but right now, Bush's media campaign hasn't even started. The Bush Spin Masters haven't unleashed their forces on Americans yet, so the polls are a bit pre-mature, IMO.

Once the Dem nomination becomes clear, and Bush starts spending his mammoth $130m war chest, then we'll see which way the electorate sways. Right now, Kerry is spending his currect war-chest just to get to the Convention. Once the nomination is set, he will again have to ask his supporters to cough up more money to challenge Bush. While all this time, Bush is just collecting and not spending. This is a media world. And this difference between an incumbent and a challenger traditionally works in the favor of incumbant in a big way.

Lets see which way the dust settles. Its a long and bumpy ride till November.
