According to this report it seems that the PPP-P "Patriots" are about to be sent packing, and the MMA are about to enter government. We shall see what actually transpires when this happens. But I am intrigued at the amount of foreign visits the MMA leaders are taking these days, with Maulana "Diesel" off to Paris, and then India, and Qazi in London etc. This article suggests the Maulana's are in effect acting as the government's official envoys...
MMA ready to replace Patriots in government
The government and the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) have recently reached an agreement, which would end the political deadlock and see the religious alliance replacing the PPPP Patriots at the Centre. A well-placed source in the MMA told Daily Times that Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali and MMA leaders Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani, Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Maulana Fazlur Rehman had struck the deal on July 7 this year. A written agreement between the two sides was expected to be signed in mid-September after modalities of the agreement were discussed in detail, the source said. “According to a verbal deal, the MMA had agreed to give General Pervez Musharraf a 14-month timeframe as president of the country in uniform,” he said.
The recent foreign visits of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani are also part of the deal between the two sides.
The source said the government had agreed not to contest the appeal of Mufti Ibrar Sultan, MMA’s MNA from Kohat, in the Supreme Court against his disqualification by an election tribunal of the Peshawar High Court. The tribunal had declared that Sultan’s religious certificate was not equivalent to a Bachelors degrees and he was therefore not eligible to contest general elections. The MMA had earlier vowed not to challenge the tribunal’ s verdict in the Supreme Court but Mr Sultan later filed an appeal against his disqualification. The Supreme Court has since suspended the MNA’s disqualification.
The source said the government agreed to give five ministries at the Centre to the MMA while the latter expressed its willingness to the appointment of a PML-QA man as the NWFP governor, he said. PML-QA Secretary General Salim Saifullah Khan has been tipped as the new governor of the province as a result of the deal. However, Mr Khan could not be contacted as his relatives told Daily Times that he had proceeded to London. The source said no fresh portfolios would be created for the MMA but the government was likely to replace the PPPP Patriots with its new allies. “It seems feasible for the government to win 65 MNAs at the cost of a dozen or so Patriots,” the source said.
He said the PML-QA had also demanded ministries in the NWFP cabinet, but the religious alliance turned down the demand and only agreed to the appointment of a PML-QA man as the NWFP governor. “The two sides have already reached an agreement on other issues like the Legal Framework Order (LFO) and only details remain to be worked out now,” he added.
