    Pakistan Receives F-7 PG Fighters.

A much needed boost to the air defence of the country. I know that Grifo-7 radars were specially modified to equip F-7s with one of the most sophisticated fire-control radars. Does anyone else have information if any BVR(Beyond Visual Range) missiles are imported for the new F-7s. We heard something a while back that negotiations were going on with South Africa's Denel for Darter series of missiles. What's the latest on that ? Do these planes have a Heads-Up Display.? Not bad with a first batch of 40 aircrafts, they will play a significant role while FC-1 in being developed. Any comments/information on PAF is welcome.

    Pakistan receives new F-7 fighters

By Craig Hoyle, JDW Aviation Editor, London

Pakistan was expected to take delivery of its first two batches of new-generation F-7-series fighter aircraft from China in late December, according to Pakistan Air Force Chief of Staff Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Mushaf Ali Mir.
The F-7PGs were scheduled to arrive in Karachi on 17 and 20 December, said ACM Mir during an interview with the Rawalpindi Jang newspaper. The first deliveries, totalling around 40 aircraft, are slated for the 31st Fighter Wing at Quetta/Samungli, with both batches to enter frontline service by April 2002.
The shipments precede the planned retirement of Pakistan's remaining F-6 fighters on 23 March.

Pakistan still hasn't been able to purchase any additional BVR missiles. And in line with all fighter-bombers in the Pakistani arsenal (with the possible exception of the F-6 and A-5) the F-7PGs do have heads up displays.

The Grifo Radar makes the F-7 BVR capable.... but Pakistan has no BVR missile to put on the F-7.

Evaluated yes, but absolutely no reports of purchases.

F-7 is less than half as good as F-16. It is a question of simple math.

I am not trying to compare F-7 with any of their rival's, but how good are they anyway?

Any specifications for F-7s that were delivered? From what I found on the web, they are merely an upgraded design of mig-21s. Is that so?

The F-7's are an upgrade to the Mig-21. However, the Mig-21 is structurally an excellent plane, even to this day. It is one of the most maneuverable planes in service today, as well as being able to maintain a competitive speed with most other modern fighters.

The F-7/Mig-21's main weakness, that of limited range, restricts its role in the PAF mainly to being an interceptor.

The most important factor in modern air combat is a plane's avionics suite. The Grifo radar installed on Pakistani F-7s more than adequately fullfuls this role, enabling the F-7s, despite being a 1950s design, to survive in the 21st century air combat environment as an air defence fighter.

Incidentally, the main problem with India's Mig-21s as I understand are their poor avionics and maintenance.

any other plane using the grifo radar? how good is that? also, if an Indian had written your post, and the last line was abt pakistan, the last line would have just vanished - (as would probably this current post) http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/hehe.gif

I have logical reasons for the last lines.

Avionics - many Indian MiG-21s contain older avionics systems, with only a few having being modernised (to the best of my knowledge). The Grifo radar, on the other hand, was a 1990s development.

Maintenance - Many countries use the MiG-21/F-7 series, and few have a similar percentage of their MiG-21/F-7 fleet involved in as many crashes as India does. The plane is the same, the only conceivable difference is the maintainance that they get.

The Grifo-7 is a multi-mode radar with look-down/shoot-down capability. It can track tagets upto 40 nm. It is an affective radar for an air defense fighter like the F-7.

It is also important to note that the F7 PG has introduced leading and trailing edge slats to improve maneuverability for the original delta wing.

New planes are nice, but statistically training hours in type, Awacs style air space control, and in the case of reasonably equal performance, numerical superiority are usually the deciding factors.

Unless you have stealth capability, superior long range missles, or supercruise speed/fuel ability, the above factors will determine success. Not sexy but true.

Exactly. This is why the Pakistan Air Force ensures that its pilots recieve more flight time than Indian pilots do - histpry has shown thatthe better pilots nearly always win. Pakistani pilots don't just fly in Pakistan.... they also gain hundreds of hours worth of flight time in the service of other nations' air forces.
