    Machine Taught Courses

A couple of academics have been trying to build machine taught courses online that basically replace a professor with a software package capable of answering most of the students questions and queries. At the moment this is just for long distance online courses but potentially it could be converted into class teaching where a robot takes on the role of the professor. After all they have more brainpower, are less likely to make mistakes and can respond to most questions with a huge database of knowlegde unlike a regular professor. Plus you dont have to pay them tonnes of money (just imagine you could not see the professor or this was a video linked class where you couldnt really see the professor - would it really matter if it was been taught by a robot or a person).

Although there is no likelyhood at least at the moment for this occuring but it is an interesting insight perhaps into the future and I see it as a way for the not so prestigious universities competing with the Harvards and Yales of this world. If students could be taught the same material that is been taught at these schools only at a fraction of the costs, it would certianly put pressure on some schools. Of course primary research still requires the human touch but this could be a way to give these professors the time they need to do research.
