Looking out for the next job

I find that people (and self included) tend to wait till their jobs are almost over before they actually start focusing on the job search. This leads to the quite interesting "networking for a job" scenerio as you try and find people who may be looking to fill up positions.

Also something I read mentioned how people dont like to change jobs when they are at their peak (presumably they are enjoying themselves). Yet when you think about it, that should be exactly the time when you need to move jobs because you are performing at your very best. Otherwise, it would be like trying to sell a defective car. I didnt really think about this until I looked back and realized how change resistant we get when we are comfortable.

So when did you start looking for your last job (how long before you were expecting to move)? And how did it work out for you? And how do you go about convicing yourself to change jobs when you are peaking rather then when you bottoming out?
