CCIE is the most coveted of all the Cisco's networking certifications and the hardest one. Thus ofcourse the salary for the CCIE's is larger than e.g CCNA etc. Over the years the test has become harder and harder. Written part is the easier but the lab is the hardest to pass. I think the passing rate for the CCIE lab is under 30%. It may have changed but thats what it was the last time i checked.
Althought, technically, you can do CCIE after just taking CCNA, but its wiser to finish CCNP or CCDP before you attempt CCIE. Ive been told this by my professors and colleagues who are in the industry with CCIE under their belt.
I am only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand.
yes, it is indeed a very hard certification...u don't even need to write CCNA for that matter to pursue CCIE...HOWEVER, keep in mind the CCIE certification is the expert level, so it assumes that u r attempting it if u have mastered the skill required to complete CCNA and CCNP curriculum certifications, without necessarily having the certifications themselves...
The theory is easy to pass as 5abi has stated...the lab is the hard part...it used to be a 2 day lab, now its just 1 day...8 hrs in total...and for the exam, u either have to go to san jose, or somewhere in pennsylvania i believe...the exam fee for CCIE as well is pretty high...so if u r going to attempt it, u better be prepared...u need a score of 80% or higher to pass the certification exam...it is adaptive as well, both the theory part, and the lab...so everytime u attempt it and fail, it is subsequently harder for ur next attempt...
Furqan: in canada, specifically in toronto, there are a lot of routing and switching CCIE's now...almost about 200 or so i believe...and more are on their way...thanx to winnet systems why don't u look into CCIE security...so far there are only 2 ppl in all of toronto who have that, and it sure is in demand...
DM: thanks for the info, also i believe there is a place in Vancover or BC somewher which does the CCIE certification nowdays also. Yes WINNET, i did my ccna and ccnp from there, with the master mr.harith, hes the best guy in this field for canada i should say. Majority of CCIE's of canada came from winnet i believe, and like you said more are on the way. CCIE security section looks like a great prospect in future, so i migh dip my hands in that area as well.
I don't even see that many CCIE jobs posted for canada these days, majority of the grads end up in america or UK somewhere. But there might be a good prospect in middle east for CCIE Grads.

CCIE is one of the most respected certifications tracks all over the world. Most certifications actually have lost thier charm coz of thier repetitive course material and exam preparation but over the years, cisco has developed such diverse CCIE tracks that each track alone is guaranteed a job. Even CCIE written status would be able to get you more then seriuos consideration for a job. Formerly there were only three tracks for CCIE now i belive there are 6 tracks (with Routing and swtiching still the most popular track). No techincal pre-req but like desimunda said that obviusly they would expect that you are qualifeid previosly as well (ccna, ccnp) to gain such a prestigiuos certification. The first time lab passing ratio is 22% and currently there are under 10K all over the world with 4-5 K in USA alone.
I myself, am a ccie wrriten with routing and swithing. My advice to u, if you already havent decided for it, go for ccie security or ccie R&S. All the best to you.
The will of Allah will not take you where the Grace of Allah will not protect you.
Thanks Saby for the 411.......but i am in middle of career change..but might just take ccie just for good knowledge if i find couple thou$and dollars on the floor somewhere
