ive seen firsthand and have been on the receiving end of the DDoS attacks.

'There are DDoS attacks all the time organized on IRC, but this is certainly the first case where you have a corporate executive who was using the services of another person to launch attacks against competitors.'

    FBI busts alleged DDoS Mafia

By Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus Aug 26 2004 11:10PM

A Massachusetts businessman allegedly paid members of the computer underground to launch organized, crippling distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against three of his competitors, in what federal officials are calling the first criminal case to arise from a DDoS-for-hire scheme.

Jay Echouafni, 37, is a fugitive from a five-count federal indictment in Los Angeles charging him with aiding and abetting computer intrusion and with conspiracy. As CEO of the online satellite TV retailer Orbit Communication Corp., Echouafni allegedly paid a business associate to recruit members of the computer underground to cripple three online stores, resulting in long periods of downtime and an estimated $2 million in losses to the businesses and their service providers.

Russian mafia getting in on the act. Most online bookies get black mailed on large sporting events either cough up or we'll close you down on the most busy betting day. It's pretty easy to have your own army aswell.

Cyber-crime is a rampant menace, and hopefully lots of lawsuits will make people think twice before launching an attack / coding a virus.
The sad part is that we have to deal with younger people involved in these crimes ... lots of teens are involved in these kinds of activities.

talking about cyber crimes and attacks, ever heard of nano technology? A friend of mine did a presentation in Uni, sayig that they have these very, very, very , very [you get the idea] small thingies. They creap into your PC via power outlets and floppy drive bay and once they reach inside, they blow up!!
wicked hun [wait, did I mix it with something else ]
Say: "Not equal are evil and good, even though the abundance of evil may please you." So fear Allah much, O men of understanding, in order that you may be successful. (Qur'aan, 5:100)

Nopes, I didn't mix it up ... they are called nano-machines ... thanks g3 for the link.

g3: did you know these nono's, as you put it, would creap into systems and then blow up kinna stuff.

I'll ask my friend to email me the reference to these non-machines, claiming that they could be used to spread terror etc.

Thinking about how technology is rapidly evolving, really makes me feel scared at time. Just imagine what life would be say 20 or 30 years down the line.
