    Substitute for Raw Papaya

So I want to cook something & the recipe calls for raw papaya (kacha papeeta) I don't have it at home & don't have the energy to go buy it. I am not even sure if I'll find it in the regular grocery stores.

Is it okay if I add meat tenderizer instead. Or are there any other substitutions?

You can find Raw Papaya in a glass jar at desi stores. It's the same shape and size as small bottle/jar of jam.

Thanks funguy. I know that. I was looking for some other form of meat tenderizer.

Don't want to use papaya or papain in the food.

Does anyone know if yogurt can help in tenderizing the meat? Like if I leave it marinated overnight or maybe even more than 24 hours?

Do you think if I use either one it will either make the food taste sweet or sour at the end?

meat tenderizer is absolutely fine replacement of raw papaya...just make sure to use a brand that has no salt added, otherwise salt your dish carefully...And yes, yougurt tenderizes the meat too if marinated overnight, although tenderizer will give the meat a different texture after cooked...so depends on the dish as well...
BTW, what are you planning to make?

Raw papaya is going to give meat the gooey kind of texture I am looking for in this particular dish. But as I mentioned before I am avoiding it. I have National's meat tenderizer, but in the ingredients it says papaya powder. So same thing :s

I was planning to make Dum ka Qeema

I might just end up making Beef Kabab gravy walay. Saw the recipe today from Raahat's cooking show. Lets see if its worth it nor not.
