    DECISION of my LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    salams guppies

i am TOTALLY TORN between these two LAPTOPS

    Fujitsu C2210-695 2.0GHz P4 256MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive, DVD-CDRW

    Sony GRz610 2.0AGHz P4 256MB RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, DVD-CDRW, 15.0"

my roommate and i went to Fry's today. we are both buying laptops.

we looked around and we were CONVINCED abt the sony. we even got the sales slips from the sales rep guy.

THEN we walked to the other aisle.

and we saw the fujitsu for the same price.

and NOW we r TOTALLY confused.

all the details are at the above url's but here's the things that are making decision hecka difficult for us....
    SONY vs FUJITSU
    - sony doesn't look as nice, its dull dark blue, fujitsu is nice silver
    - sony is a better name than fujitsu [is it really?]
    - sony's memory expandable to 1GB vs 768MB for fujitsu
    - sony's USB ports are 1.1 while fujitsu's are 2.0
    - sony's screen is sharper, fujitsu not as good a screen as sony [this is a fact even the sales rep guy mentioned]
    - sony 7.5 lbs. with battery, fujitsu 8.3 lbs.

my roommate's almostttttttttt decided abt the fujitsu, i though am not sure....

my roommate's arab and we met an arab sales rep there who was saying don't get the sony get the fujitsu, so that's confusing us even more...

he came to us and told us that there MIGHT be a sale on friday when these two will go on sale so we are gonna go back on friday inshallah....and get one of these two....

so now i need to decide before friday which one i'm gonna get!!!!!!!!

    i'm going TOTALLYYYYYY

if it was YOU which one would you get and Y????!!!!!!!!!!

mods i've posted a copy in the tech forum too, sorry abt that but i thought this way i'll get more perspectives n replies...if u think its not appropriate tho plz go ahead and delete the post..

and in case u decide to keep it...thanks :~)

First of all, there is a $140 price difference, if I read it correctly. After tax, this difference will be about $155.

Here are the differences you identified.

    - sony doesn't look as nice, its dull dark blue, fujitsu is nice silver
Its a personal choice. Sony is quite sleek too.

    - sony is a better name than fujitsu [is it really?]
In fact, Fujitsu is also a very respectable name. So name brand is not an issue here

    - sony's memory expandable to 1GB vs 768MB for fujitsu
Unless you want to use the computer for some highly complex processes, such high RAM may never be required. As such you may never upgrade it anyway, so this is a moot point

    - sony's USB ports are 1.1 while fujitsu's are 2.0
Definitely 2.0 is better and much faster. Most new accessories are coming for 2.0. So this is a definite plus for Fujitsu. On the other hand, Sony uses Memory Stick, which is neat if you have any other Sony product (PDA, digicam etc). If not, it doesn't matter.

    - sony's screen is sharper, fujitsu not as good a screen as sony [this is a fact even the sales rep guy mentioned]
I am assuming you checked the screen yourself. Salesmen often make up such differences, when they want to sell a certain brand. In this case, his commission is higher on Sony. Just FYI.

    - sony 7.5 lbs. with battery, fujitsu 8.3 lbs.
Unless you want to tag it along a lot, you won't feel this much difference.

Yes, Sony is offering a lot more software, but perhaps not all of it will be used by you anyway, and for the rest you can get it from elsewhere anyway, so it also becomes a moot point.

A critical difference which I noticed is that Fujitsu's battery life seems more than Sony. The relatively short battery life is always my pet peeve with my Dell notebook, and something everyone should look into before buying a notebook.

Long story short, Sony is charging more because of more hard disk space. Just for comparison, I have 40 Gigs in my home PC which is 2 years old now, and 22 Gigs is still empty, even though I have zillions of digital pics and many digital home video clips and a lot of music stored in there.

Unless you can justify why you need an additional 10 Gigs, and are willing to spend $150 for this, I would recommend going for Fujitsu.

ps. This is MOST definitely NOT the decision of your life You will know it, when u get there.

actually Faisal bhai the latest thing is k at the store the diff was only 10 bucks aaj hi hum dekh k ayay hayn...its weird the website says sth diff...but yes the diff is only $10 so price ka koi khaas fark naheen hae ...

yup par woh ganda sa blue colorrrrr

        hmmmmm.......but if i do graphics programming..then i'll need the RAM isn't it..

Faisal bhai with the optional batterry the sony can go upto 3-5 hrs..

i dont really store stuff on my computer and i can always burn it into CDR's so woh toh masla naheen hae...and at this point i'll just pay more for the better thing...

Since you obviously like Fujitsu, then go for it. Personal preference is very important when you are comparing so similarly configured machines.

Baaqi RAM kaun upgrade karta hai, aur optional battery kaun leta hai, ye tau waqt hi batayay ga. Aap kall jaa karr Fujitsu lein, aur uss ke baad, araam se bister mein beth karr Gupshup karein. who---me ko choro, ussay kiya pata :~P

          ps. Good luck

Faisal bhai memory toh hum dono mein aur meri roomie usi wakt he upgrade kerein ge aur optional betterry toh mein definitely loon gi...

Fujitsu mujhay naheen meri roommate ko zaada psand hae mein toh abhee bilkul 50-50 confused hoon...

ab aik naya angle laya hae meri roomie ne ke log jun dekhein ge sony viao uthaya hua hay toh cool baat ho gi lekin agar fujitsu uthaya hua ho toh woh koi itna cool naheen lagta

            bohot mushkil decision hay

waisay i have a feeling Faisal bhai mein ne wohi lena hae jo roomie le gee aur woh toh fujitsu le gi mujhay lag rha hae

i'ma do istakhara and then decide inshallah..

waisay i guess itni bari baat bhee naheen hae bas laptop hi toh hae...

p.s. thanks a lot for the help

if you are going to tag it along at all and its not in a back pack then get a lighter one and if possible once in which you can take out the cdrom drive and stuff. My pet peeve is the weight of my dell followed by its lousy battery life. For everything else i use wireless!

If I were you I would get a tablet pc, then you would never have to take note book to class .

*Your first point about looks is most definately a personal choice so i am silent on the issue (*zor zor se chillata hai Sony!)

*Sony's brand equity is decidedly higher than Fujitsu's. No two ways about that. (Sorry Faisal )

*I agree with Faisal on the expandibility issue. I have rarely seen people upgrade their laptops as such. Even for graphic-intensive programming, you seem to have a lot of memory at hand even now.

*This issue (and in fact the last one as well) concerns with your use of the machine. Without going into many technical details, if you seem to connect a lot of USB devices a lot of times to the laptop (digicams, x-drives and what not) then only speed would really kick in as a decisive factor, otherwise not.

*Screen brilliance is something i have always been very passionate about. The more the merrier as i say here. Remember: No matter what you do on your machine, you are going to LOOK at it, right? Try working at two machines with different brilliance levels, you will know what i am saying. It just feels so good to have one with sharper screen (plus its easy on the eyes as well). Hope i don't sound too biased. :~p

*Since you seem to be carrying it around a lot, weight is a decisive factor too. Yaad rakhna, jab campus main utha utha kar tangein tootne lagein gi to aik aik 0.1 lb bhi pahaar sa mehsoos ho ga.

*You are getting the optional battery as it is so that's fine.

Conclusion: Given the two models, I'd go for a Sony..aankhein band kar ke. :~) Good luck.

brand equity kya hoti hae? does it mean they r a more trusted name in laptops?

khanu bhai but it doesn't LOOK good why couldn't sony come up with the same thing in silver or some multi colors instead of all plain dull blue

                          Allah Mian...kithay phasaya menu :halo:

Brand Equity: It is the reputation/perceived image of the brand (manufacturer) by the people...and not necessarily may be the same as that carried by experts in their field. Yani aam loug is ko acha samajhtay hain...the point that your roomie said ke haath main sonie ho ga to shashkay bhi hoon gae, us liay! :~) Tell me something, taking an average citizen in mind, what brand name is more likely to ring a bell in most cases? Unaided recall i mean. Answer yourself.

Memory cards, since you are already getting them with the initial purchase, to i am pretty sure ke for quite 'some' time, you would not really need to feel the difference between the incremental memory (1000-748=some 252 mb i guess?). The more the merrier for sure, but at this point in time (and for quite some time to come)...yeh moot point hai. Agar aik plate khana khana ho to chaar platein rakh kar dekhna hai kia?

Looks ke baare main who-me se acha jawab mere paas nahin hai! I am sure you must have asked the sales rep ke aur kisi color main hai ke nahin..right?

                          Good luck!
