Militants deny losses, reject "safe passage" proposal
Kashmiri militants on Wednesday rejected the Indian offer of "safe passage" to withdraw from the Indian side of Kashmir, saying they planned to move forward not back. On the contrary, the chief of the Islamist Harakatul Mujahideen, Fazal Rehman Khalil, stated in an
interview from Islamabad that he would "offer Indians safe passage out of Kashmir" if they chose to withdraw. The rhetoric of the infiltrators is getting increasingly boisterous and they have termed the Indian offer a sign of weakness. They have also
been referring to the Indian strikes as 'ineffective' since the jets were bombing from high altitudes with very little accuracy. Meanwhile, hundreds of heavily armed guerrillas have taken up positions in the
Kargil, Drass and Batalik sectors that overlook the key supply highway linking the Kashmir valley with Ladakh. In the wake of these developments, the fighting seems headed for further intensification.

According to official sources, combat jets bombarded large number of hideouts of intruders in high mountain
ridges of the Kargil region in the early hours of today. Heavy artillery shelling by the Pakistani army was reported from Drass, Batalik and Poonch-Rajouri sectors throughout the night. So far, 46 Indian defence personnel have been killed, 174 wounded and 12 have been reported missing in the ongoing operation to flush out armed infiltrators from the region.

INS Mysore commissioned, PM calls on Navy to be alert
The Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today commissioned the second indigenously built guided missile destroyer INS Mysore with a call to the Navy to be alert for defending the nation against external aggression. Speaking aboard the 6,700 tonne INS Mysore', the prime minister made a special mention about the aggression by Pakistan-backed infiltrators in the Kargil sector of Kashmir and expressed confidence that the Navy would, if required, show the same dedication as the Army and Air Force currently battling the intruders. The ship's arsenal comprises 16 surface to surface missiles, a battery of surface to air missiles, a 100 mm gun, four 30mm Gatling guns, torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets and chaff decoys in addition to two helicopters and advanced radar and electronic warfare equipment.
