    This is South Africa...

The day I came back to SA I saw on TV a documentary about a gruesome mass murder that had taken place in Cape Town just last week. 7 innocent men, gagged, shot, had their throats slit also...the footage was horrifying and had my head spinning for the next few days.

If you're going to be in CT, just avoid the Sea Point area alright? Otherwise you'll be in gangster territory.

Yesterday, a very close friend of ours' brother was stabbed and mugged as he was coming off a bus. The stab was 2 inches deep in his leg. All done for a little bit of money.

And day before yesterday, was sitting at home with someone in the afternoon when we heard a car hooting incessantly and lots of shouting. I thought there might've been an accident on the road, but when we went out to check, I saw my neighbour running out of his house with a gun, still in his kurta and topi (it was after jummah). I just run back inside the house. When I told my parents afterwards, they hardly said anything much to my shock and amusement, and didn't even make enquiries!!

I think I'd be a very poor ambassador for this country, but I still love this place very much. :sunny:

If youre trying to stop people from going to see the world cup that was a very lousy attempt :--D

It was? Shucks, I think I'll just have to be more 'creative' and come up with more stories to scare off any guppies planning to come here. But there's no harm in warning them is there?

Hope I didn't spoil your plans mr. gum !

No you didn't ruin my plans my feline friend. Come to think of it you're doing many of us (those who cant go) quite a favour. I never got a ticket to the matches so now i dont want anyone else to go either. *sigh* Misery loves company

Anywho, coming back to the thread, what was the motive behind the murder of the 7 people?

was just discussing the crime rate in south africa with a friend of mine....

actually we were pondering why NZ wud cancel its matches in kenya due to security concerns when south africa itself isnt a very safe place to be in....
Both Halal & Haram r evident but between them r doubtful things, most ppl have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from suspicious things saves his religion & honor, & whoever indulges in suspicious things indulges in Haram.

well, it was a massage parlour...all the guys that were murdered were gay. Noone knows the motive.

And our friend who was mugged, all they took was his cellphone!

When I went to see the South Africa vs Pakistan match in the 96 world cup I was frisked by 10 cops before they would let me in!! They made me throw away everything like food, banners etc as it could be used as a possible weapon! hah! (throwing tomatoes maybe). there were swat teams and snipers placed on the rooftops of buildings all around the stadium!!! talk about security.

other unimportant highlights of the day:
-My friend doesnt show up with the tickets so i had to buy em in black from someone at the gates
-I get chittared by a cop for trying to jump the line
-My wallet gets stolen with all my eidi inside it
-I spend all day hungry cuz they made me throw away my food
                -Pakistan loses!! bummer!!!
-the people i was supposed to get a ride with back home abandon me! so i take the 2 hour bus ride back home

Most countries are pretty bad, its just a matter of how much media coverage certain events get.

The media is a very powerful tool and countries with strong media links in this case south africa will broadcast certain events, Lets say the same thing happened in Pakistan, do you think we would hear of it? I dont think so so lets not give the country a bad image just because of this.

As far as the crime rate goes,
I've heard from ex~South Africans that it's always
been pretty bad down there. They said that the
crime rate has always been dangerously~disturbingly~
high and the manner in which it's carried out,
heinous. It's a matter of coverage,
some days there's a lot, other days there isn't.
Aside from that I've heard ravishing reviews
about the beauty of the country.
However, if the crime rate goes down, I just might
consider travelling down there someday for
the purpose of wtinessing the scenery as well
the real state, about which by the way,
I've heard lots of oohs and aahs
It's better to stay quite and give the impression that you're stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Isn't South Africa one of the most dangerous places on earth? According to a documentary that I've seen on the A&E channel.

                            Yeah man, that's correct.

Catty, be careful with Police and Blacks. They might robbed you.
