A Difficult Week for AOL's AIM

The world's most popular instant-messaging service sporadically lost its AIM this week.

A power failure in Northern Virginia caused some of America Online's services to fail on Thursday afternoon, leaving the millions of people who rely on AOL's Instant Messenger application to revert to the good-old telephone in order to connect with their buddies.

"For a brief period of time, people couldn't get into the service," said Nicholas Graham, a spokesman for AOL. "But it was just a short time. We're advising people to sign off the service and then sign on again to
    get it to work."

Some AIM users reported being locked out of the service for about an hour Thursday; others said they were able to get in, but were unable to access their "buddy lists."

But Graham insisted that "this was a one-time incident, and we've got it fixed now."

But it wasn't just this one time: Earlier this week, a so-called "equipment glitch" with the AIM servers caused a similar buddy-list problem, leaving AIMers buddy-less for about an hour. And other users reported having trouble with AIM all week, either being locked out for short periods of time or frequently dropped from the service while
    logged on.

Graham insisted that the new problem and the problems earlier in the week were "totally unrelated," and he reiterated that AIM quickly got back up.

But the AIM failure, though accidental, does seem to bolster the case of AOL's messaging rivals at Yahoo and MSN, who have long argued that an open, interoperable messaging standard -- with key servers in many different geographic areas -- would improve the chatting experience.

By the way, this article discusses that AIM lost service a few times. Frankly, we don't care much about it.

The problem being discussed elsewhere is that passwords for AIM are being hacked and virus/trojans are being sent using other ppl's nicks.

        Thanks for your help, anyway!
