Work To Live Or Live to Work

I was browsing through the career forum and I read this sentence
"I am looking for a suitable job anywhere."
I'm kinda speechless...don't know how to respond to this bro...

Thinking in general terms my understanding is that desies work to live and gora teaches that we should live to work (work is passion)...which approach is more realistic?

    ciao

Boss – Ideally one should strive for a nice balance between work and life. I personally, don’t like to mix my business life with my personal matters, and vice-e-versa. Having a job (any job, a suitable job) is important to many people for the simple reason of survival. I don’t recall the sociological theory (something like a pyramid) where one’s needs (hierarchy of needs, built upon self-gratification, sex, work, etc.) are conferred. So, the concept of “reasonable job” has different meanings to different people.

Well. I think most desies come to USA or any other country with a mission. Mission to support their family, get education, and get a good career. On the other hand the gora people live from pay check to pay check. Then don't have any responsibilites so who cares what these gora people do.

We desies are hard working people and thats the bottom line.

      bye

so true. mostly b/c nothing really has been "handed to us" (spoon fed)... but i dont think that will last long. desi mentality might evolve with the assimilation into american culture. maybe not now, or in the next 10 yrs.. but maybe 50-100 yrs down the line... just like if u see... most of the industrial revolution's success was due to the immigrants coming in from all parts of the world to america.. and working hard at whatever they could get their hands on. at that time it was mostly the eastern europeans and irish and italian immigrants.. whereas now its mostly desis and asians that are invading they wanted a better life.. and they worked hard at it based on their morals and their values. just like desis today. america's morals have deteriorated in the past 50-60 yrs. like severely. and b/c the "baby boomer" american generation has seen this as the "norm"... they dont work hard to their potential. quite unfortunate for them.. but more jobs for us

In my opinion if you want to do anything well you have to give it 100%. Work hard while you are in that situation and then forget about it when you knock off. After 6:00 pm it's time to chill out.

Perhaps Tazz it cud be that *generally spkg in terms of goras* their passion of living to work cud be because they take this life seriously enuf to believe that they shud live every day to its last drop. Life infact is work *personally spkg* Not necessarily working career wise. But life does involve a lot of effort.
When it comes to an average desi, *again I'm generalizing* we see that we WORK to LIVE! That cud be because the foundation of our basic upbringing mentality, comes from a 3rd world country. Where the economic status is often precarious, and one reason why we think we HAVE to work, is due to the fear of having no security or a certain shelter in case something drastic happens tomorrow. An ave Desi from our background isn't born with riches and gold at hand usually. Therefore, Desi get strangled in the infamous struggle of status quo, and much more jazz. Where as goras know how to enjoy life, without complicating it with details such as status quo, or the craze of getting More than what that neighbour across the street has. I might not be quoting perfect examples, but then again its just another prospect to look at things. One thing I've noted quite extensively about our background is that: We never live in present ever! Which creates much of the problems in our lives. We're either recalling the glorious past, Or dreaming about a resplendent future. I don't think, many of us take a day as it comes. Rather we're demanding more of ourselves than what we're capable of, and are not taking a minute out to appreciate what 'today' blessed us with. Or that how much we've accomplished so far.
I can't rationalize it for the moment, that why most of us work to live, exactly! However, BoSS, if u can answer the question in my former reply... u have found ur answer. And if ur all confused as which to justify in order to find a solution more closer and suitable or approachable in realistic terms... then here's what. A balance of everything makes life livable and enjoyable. Any extremes in either cases leads to drastic results and diminishes the very essence of reasons that accelerate us all... wanting to live to work or either work to live.

Hey come on now. That's a bit harsh.

I live in London, and I know a lot people who would love to see their parents, but don't have the time. They work their butts off from morning to late evening, just to earn a living and feed their stomach etc etc

There are a lot of Asian people too who have had to see their parents go and live in nursing homes. They don't have time to watch their parents 24/7.

What if your mom was very ill or couldn't even life a plate up, and if you had to go to work and leave her all alone at home all day, how would you feel? And imagin if you had no one else to look after her. What would you do then?

I'd say life is kinda tough here in London. It's actually pretty sad. No one has time for each other, and if you work in in Central London, you spend most of your life waiting for buses, or trains, than spending time with your kids.
:hula: :hula: :hula: and more :hula:

                          I agree!

At the risk of wandering off the topic slightly... I used to work in London too. Life was really really hard there. Just to commute on the underground was a real hassle. You almost have have to fight to get to work. Also, becuause the government take so much taxes (23% income, 17.5% sales, 200% petrol), everyone has to work that much harder.

I was there last week and the first five minutes of using the train reminded me why I ran away from England in the first place.

So you see, there are some places where "goras" work incredibly hard alongside people like you and me, not becuase they want to... but becuase they have to.
