    Sticks And Stones......

"Sticks and stones may break my bones,
but names will never hurt me."

Anyone know what this rhyme means?

    here's my try:

No matter how much you demean me, or belittle me, I will never feel intimidated, scared, or small.

I've also heard Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can blow you away! which means that words are more powerful than using any physical violence.

Its one of many sayings in language that means something different from what it seems to say 'names can never hurt me' means 'you can't hurt me; who cares what you think? your insults are powerless; you don't matter, and I am stronger than you are'.

i think calling ppl wierd names is fun...
No, it isnt, I think this saying refers to calling names to hurt someone. basically alluding to an unbreakable ego.

"I like you, but only as a friend"
so i guess welcome to that club, God knows when one wont say that to me

                        Here's another version.....

Sticks and stones are hard on bones.
                        Aimed with angry art,
                        Words can sting like anythin.
                        But silence breaks the heart.

Kids wud often say them in defence, while being bullied in a play ground or school yard by other kids.
However its the most ironic for words bite so bad.
