today, for the first time, i had lunch at this open-air terrace restaurant at school. while enjoying the sun and the food, half listening to my friend's latest series of complaints, i noticed a couple of brownbirds hop onto the adjacent table. they were cheeping continuously and looking fleetingly at my table. i was convinced had my mournful pal not been around, they'd have hopped onto my table. anyway, i am wondering if i should have tossed them a few crumbs. i didnt beuase i was afraid i might just scare them away with my crude way of tossing. anyone here knows how to feed brownbirds gently?

I dont think they would be scared by your way of tossing
these birds or in our case pigeons are used having people around em and they hopped onto the tables cause they were expecting tidbits thrown their way
There was this one time i bought myself a falafel and decided to sit and eat it there on the benches
Soon a flock of pigeons started gathering around me pecking the ground
I was so much missing my own pigeons back home that i started feeding them the falafel
bit by bit first the bread then the salad then the falafel ...even the pickles
and before i realized it my lunch had been eaten by them while i was left with the empty bag
and the greedy birds were still hungry
chalak kaheen ki !!!!

anchal,
these are brownbirds, not doves or pigeons, so i dont think they are used to being fed by people. you can say from the way they sneak looks at you, the way they look away when you look back, and from their cheep-cheep..
and ya, just as in your case, they reminded me of the birds i used to see around back home.Simple ain't easy.

brownbirds are very panicky lil things.....to feed em you have to be evem more slicker....just slowly put the crumbs down by your spot and take a stroll somewhere nearby......and observe
U notice how they look at you when/if you try to summon em? Its hilarious.

you guys are so sad :-P
is it so difficult to empathize with a die-hard ornithologist?
kakay, na, i like my bird eating out of my hand, no leaving crumbs around stuff. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
naik, when i say birds, you can take it for granted that i am talking of female birds. why brown? birds of a feather flock together.
mysterygirl, chee chee
Xtreme, i thought you knew me well enuf to read between the lines. ;-)
just coming after lunch, and a 30 minute wait for the two brownbirds to fly by, but looks like they decided to flutter elsewhere today. *sigh* life sux for a brownbird enthusiast stuck in the west...Simple ain't easy.
