    Mangoes

It's 2:30 in the morning and I am craving for mangoes.

My history of eating mangoes in US does not go very far... only two weeks to be precise, actually.

Sure I have had my share of mangoes back in Pakistan, but I truly am kinda illiterate in their different forms, names, and kinds. I can only tell you a good mango from a bad one, after I eat one.

So anyway, I had never shopped for mangoes before mainly because of different people's opinion. I have heard this phrase 'Mangoes here (in US) are nothing compared to mangoes in Pakistan' that it kinda intimidated me from the very beginning. I don't know, I guess I take influence from people's opinions when it comes to a fruit whose names, kinds, and form I had never been able to memorize.

But after these two weeks' experience I have realized that I have been listening to people who would regularly buy 'tokaras' of mangoes on weekly basis here in US, would eat them as desert every night like a strict ritual, and then after the first bite would always say 'Mangoes here are nothing compared to ones back home'.

uh, silly me, what do I know about mangoes!

    Roman Yara,

Mangoes alone is the reason of my existence. I was born in Multan, the best mango-growing region of Pakistan. They come in as many varieties as you can imagine, I would guess over a 100. As a young boy, I remember going to Mango Orchids in nearby villages of Multan, and eating mangoes (chooping is the right term) to my heartís content. My favorite to this day is Anwar Latoor, only grown in Multan. There is ďChousaĒ best eaten by first gently massaging it to make it soft and then Chooping it. Toota Pari has a distinct taste, but all Mangoes are pretty tasty, and once in a while you come across a sour (tursh) one.

After a few mangoes, a Kuchi Lassi (lassi with milk and water, and salt) is a best drink. It is said that that liquid will all transform into blood when consumed, so you become healthy.

I donít care much about mangoes from the Caribbean or Mexico. They just donít match the taste of Mangoes from Multan.

John my lad, you will find that Mangoes are in shorter supply than women in this land..astaghfarallah. So the statement, you will always have mangoes, does not hold true here.
