Assalam-u-alaikum to all the current gupshup members. This is my first time posting on a forum since I am a new member so please ignore any discrepancies you may find. First off ill give a brief introduction of myself and then ill give you my view on a topic that has been bothering me. I currently reside in Toronto, Canada. I have some friends who have been members of gupshup for quite some time now and they are the ones who introduced me to this discussion group. I am currently studying computer engineering at the university level. I am of Pakistani decent but have lived all my life in the Canada. This leads to my topic of discussion “Is there no middle ground??” .
After reading many posts on gupshup I have come to the general conclusion that the majority of people who post here are either extreme fobs or completely white washed. There is no single forum on here that is for Pakistanis who wants to express their moderate viewpoints. If one posts a comment about religion there is usually a reply from some cleric so says “ NO!! NO!! NO!! Astugfurallah” or from someone who is trying to twist religion and conform it to their liking. Islam is about moderation not of extremes every cleric knows this yet makes Islam seem to be so difficult to abide by when it isn’t. Then you have people posting about relationships and saying dating is okay and saying bismillah before eating something harram is ok. So here we have two extreme viewpoints and no middle ground. Then you have the people who are fobs who pretend not to be fobs. These are the people who annoy me the most. If you’re a fob admit it and be proud of it, its your culture don’t try to be something your not. What I would like to know is ho many more people are out there that feel the same way, who don’t have the fob mentality but also are not drinking, or going clubbing, and do practice their religion. So my proposition to the administrators of gupshup…please create a room where moderates can express there views and wont get typical responses like “ Abay yaar” or comments like “ Only dirty fobs like haleem” whats up with that I love haleem that doesn’t mean im fob. I would like to hear as many opinions on this as possible. Thanks for having me on gupshup.
