    ISLAMABAD, July 14: Dr Khurram Afridi became the first non European to win the coveted BMW Scientific Award. BMW AG,the German manufacturer, gives this international award every alternate year to six young scientists for their pioneering work in the area of mobility.
    With a total of 70,000 Euros in prize money, the BMW Scientific Award is among the most highly endowed international research
    competitions of its kind. Prizes are awarded in two categories of doctor's theses and master's theses to the authors of the three best studies submitted. Since its inception in 1991, Dr Afridi is the first non European who won the award.
    Dr Afridi, a Pakistani national, who was born in Lahore in 1966, received the second prize in the doctor's theses category for his
    work on the design of advanced automotive electrical systems done at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
    In his PhD thesis, Dr Afridi developed a method for designing vehicle electrical systems and applied it to develop innovative
    onboard networks, including a 42-volt multiplexed vehicle electrical system.
    His research work includes the development of the new computer software, Maestro, which can reduce the development time for designing an electrical system from months to hours.
